Ukraine 2013 Freelander 2 2.0T SE Auto Fuji White

My previous cars I had each for 18 years & each for 250,000 km (Seat Ibiza & Peugeot 504), when I bought my Freelander my second car on the list was a Tiguan (with a proper petrol engine!), but it had a DSG, so it was the Freelander (petrol!) which has a proper auto transmission! Previous cars were manual, but I am over it these days with city driving! In the country the Freelander auto locks up so in effect it is a manual anyway, so why bother with a manual! I would not touch a DSG with three barge poles end to end! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

England 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Manual Zermatt Silver

speak as you find, 15 months of ownership, no issues, just servicing, that included the 10 year service, full price negotiated off asking price when bought, very happy having paid £5200 in Dec 2016 for an HSE model with HST bodykit. Thumbs Up

Everything except parking sensors works, 160,000 miles, great car to drive. Bow down

Previous wealthy lady owner had it as a company car and serviced it well, she was a trim little thing which meant when I was deciding which one to buy this was the ONLY one I saw that didn't have a split on the side of the drivers 'leather' seat Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

Having said that, I have only had 9 cars in 40 years, I can honestly say I have never had a bad one. Mr. Green 2017 SEAT Ateca 4drive 2.0 xcellence (May 2022 -

Is there anything wrong with the manual version? I've had such a bad experience with the DSG box in the Yeti that I think I need to go back to a manual. Also, is the TD4.e much better on fuel than the TD4 and are there any known issues with it?

United Kingdom 2014 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Orkney Grey

Treated with sympathy, nothing wrong with the manual box, I’m only on 55k, but it’s towed heavy trailers, broken down cars, recovered stuck disco’s, off-roaded in places I was amazed it had no issues with and reversed up inclines.
Ok you can’t crawl else you will cook the clutch ,mine made a dodgy smell once or twice, but no lasting effects... 2000 Xei 1.8 gone
2004 HSE Td4 Auto, MT's, sump guard, sliderz - gone
2014 GS Man - AT's, Mantec Sump guard and tank guard, split charger in boot, towbar, work in progress...

United Kingdom 2010 Freelander 2 TD4_e GS Manual Biscay Blue

I have had the TD4e manual since new in 2010. History as follows:
MGP history is 34.7
Clutch started to slip at 25,000 miles which exhibits itself as slipping briefly at 2k rpm when accelerating in 5th or 6th gear. Still on the same clutch and now have 67k miles on the clock.
Set of new tyres at 29,000 miles.
New wiper blades at 33,000 miles
New front brake pads, rear discs and pads at 40,000 miles
Fuel tank sender and wiring loom replaced at 48,000 miles
New set of tyres at 54,000 miles
Replaced rear brake pads due to delamination at 61,000 miles
New AGM battery 64,000 miles

Other repairs that i can't remember at what mileage were the offside passenger door lock needed replacing and also the rear door loom and switch plus the wheel arch trims as they get deformed over time.

As you can see from the other replies, this is pretty much the standard set of repairs for the FL2. Having owned most of the other LR models i can say from personal experience the FL2 has been the most reliable.

Get to know Dan at Duckworths, he helps keep the cost of ownership down.

Nigel

The FL2 Auto is a traditional torque converter - the DSG is an automatic dry clutch manual. The older style of torque converter gearboxes are normally much more reliable.

VW seem to make weak cars these days - got through clutches on a Passat and an Up - I think they make them from cheese.

I drove a manual for 30 years and thought I'd never buy auto, but modern diesel engines and modern non-asbestos clutches are not good bed fellows - the former have a tendency to rip the latter to pieces too easily. One careless hill start or sharp pull off and they can be fried. Maybe not all as bad as VW, but it's a fair generalization. FL2 manual may be better of course.

62 plate with 141,000 mls Tows regularly and is still on the original clutch and DMF with no issues . Averaging over 44mpg (from dash display) with mix of motorway and stop start driving. Never had any slipping or burning smells but do agree since the move away from asbestos linings that clutches (on all vehicles)are not as strong as they used to be. Big Cry

Of the 5 FL2s that have been in the family two had manual gearbox problems where it wouldn't stay in some gears, especially 5th. Got rid of one through a trade in and the other one was under LR warranty and required a gearbox rebuild. Went auto after that. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto
