That’s the part that fails

To get the cap off you will need a heat gun, I cracked mine trying to remove it cold

Problem solved

This topic has been quiet for a while now and I'd like to thank p_gill particularly for his help.
Since replacing the PCV membrane https://vanos-bmw.com/product/membrane-land-rover-engine-b6324s my car has been as quiet as this thread of late. So nice! It was also nice to note that you don't have to replace the entire PCV cover for big $$ as the membrane can be done seperately. Interesting that there is only one supplier for the part and that coming from Russia, but it got to me in Australia in about a fortnight.

I'm glad actually that I didn't find the root cause straight away otherwise I may not have replaced all the bits that I did, and those bits really did need replacing (belt tensioners, hoses etc...)

Can you detail how you removed the cap for the PCV? Was it difficult?


How many items from the list have you completed? I've done 13 so far.


1. Starter motor - typically fails at 100,000 miles or 10 years
2. Engine Mounts
3. Blower Resistor
4. AC Compressor (Volvo owner recommends rebuilding the clutch pack)
5. Rear Pinion Bearing on Differential - replaced the gear oil and added a magnetic drain plug
6. Spark Plugs - replaced mine twice (every 50,000 miles)
7. serpentine belt, tensioner, idler - replaced mine at 113,000 miles/10 years
8. Thermostat - replaced mine at 10 years (also replaced two coolant hoses)
9. Power steering fluid and reservoir replaced due to noisy heavy steering
10. Battery - replaced twice
11. ATF fluid flushed - search for Gibbons method (note: I used the modified Gibbons method)
12. Brake fluid flushed
13. Front Brake calipers refurbished
14. Coolant replaced
15. Haldex fluid and filter - I used genuine Volvo parts for this (it was cheaper than Land Rover)
16. Fuel Pressure sending unit -
17. Ignition coils (Some evidence that a failed Thermostat leads to over heating and premature Coil failure)
18. Oil leak at Brake booster
19. Radiator Fan
20. BOT Gear oil for power Transfer unit (for mine I drilled a drain hole)

For my 2008 LR2 with 114,000 miles
Completed #1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 20
Not completed #2, 3, 4, 16, 17, 18, 19
