Very sad indeed. Particularly since this has all been on “our watch” in generational terms.

As recently as 1964, when John Hillaby did his “Journey to the Jade Sea” he recounts the difficulties in crossing the El Barta plains (which are a bit north of Ol Pejeta where this last male northern white rhino lived latterly). He describes dense bush and being constantly on guard as they moved from the territory of one angry rhino to the next for a couple of days. Now it is wide-open plain and you cross it in a couple of hours by Land Rover. Such is progress. 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

One of my sons (geologist) recently worked in Botswana and was quite impressed by how the elephants are protected with little poaching and government corruption, in fact in some areas elephants are a problem as there are too many of them and they wander into town.
My other (agronomist) son works in Kenya and often sees rhinos and elephants in his travels in fact the elephants can be a problem trampling crops despite use of electric fences. Apparently the older elephants will push one of the younger ones against the electric fence to knock it down - great parenting skills ! 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
