FL2 sudden jolt when driving - lots of fault codes

Hi all

Hoping you can shed some light on this issue! I can see there is a sticky on a juddering fault but not sure if it relates to the same issue so have started a new thread -apologies if this is the wrong thing to do.

We have a 2007 FL2 td4 manual with 80k on the clock.

Over the past couple of weeks we have noticed an intermittent and sudden jolt when driving along (feels like a misfire where you lose power for a split second).

This came to a head yesterday when my wife was driving the car and it did this jolt a couple of times then the engine cut out completely. There was a message on the dash reading ‘Reduced engine performance’ and a separate message on the stereo head unit reading ‘Low voltage’. She was unable to restart the car but when the AA turned up an hour or so later it started on the button.

The AA patrolman plugged it in and the following fault codes came back on it:

Patrol found the following fault code/s:System : Engine control - 57Y / Diesel EDC 16CP39 Status :P1259 - Communication between engine control unit and immobilizer. Error Message : Missing message. Error static. Status :P0335 - Crankshaft position sensor. Error Message : Malfunction. Error static. Status :P0336 - Crankshaft position sensor. Error Message : Malfunction. Error static. Status :P1298 - Internal control module Fuel injection. Error Message : Malfunction. Error static. Status :P061B - Internal control module torque control. Error Message : Invalid data from node. Error static. Status :P02E8 - Intake-air flow solenoid valve position sensor. Error Message : Malfunction. Error static. Status :P02E1 - Mass or volume air flow circuit. Error Message : Malfunction. Error static. Status :P02E9 - Intake-air flow solenoid valve position sensor. Error Message : Component stuck closed

He wasn’t able to shed any light on the issue and the car is now back at home.

Don’t know where to start! Any ideas as to what’s the cause may be? Also recommendations for a FL2 specialist in Warwickshire would be much appreciated.

In case it’s relevant, the battery and alternator are fine, next service is due shortly and timing belt was done about 2k ago.

I suspect most of those faults are cascading. I would clear them and then do another fault code check to hopefully pinpoint the problem

My bet is on the crankshaft position sensor.

I blew a headlamp bulb and had lots of fault codes etc. Worth checking your bulbs but get the codes cleared and do a trickle battery charge. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Sounds like crank position sensor as alex has already suggested above. It feels like you have momentarily turned the ign off & on. (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.

Thanks all for your replies.

I’ve read up on the crankshaft sensor issue since and the symptoms described sound very familiar.

I’ll clear out the codes tomorrow and see if it gives me a more specific indication of the fault.

Replaced the crank position sensor on Wednesday and seems to have sorted it. Cost £20 and about 15 mins to fit..
