FL2 Drive Train issues

All,

I purchased a 2012 FL2 HSE 2.2 TD4 on the first of February

It's been back to the independent garage twice - the second visit is currently now four days long.

It kept tripping limp mode (Reduced Engine Performance) which they traced to a split intercooler hose - common enough.

But the bigger issue was that as you changed up from 1st through to 4th, there was a 'clank' coming from the back end, unless you changed up super gingerly - abnormally so.

So the car, which is under warranty,went back in last week having been inspected the week before. When the car is up on the ramp and the clutch released in forward or reverse gears, the clank had progressed to a 'slap'. They suggest dodgy Haldex and replaced with a recon unit.

The noise continued. The slap continued.

They've replaced the diff with a recon unit. The slap continued.

They then change the transfer box for a replacement (non-recon) unit. The slap continued.

They then suggested it was the prop shaft bearing. They then scrubbed this idea, and now say they suspect a front drive shaft is dodgy, and it therefore sending all the power to the back.

I've no idea. Has anyone experience anything similar? Drive shafts? Dual Mass Flywheel? Gearbox? Clutch?

My brother has had three FLs and had never had a scrap of difficulty other than a new clutch (which is almost a consumable).

Like I said, I've owned the car a little over three weeks and its not due back until Thursday.

It's a shame, its a lovely lovely car in great cosmetic condition, but something is lurking beneath.

Any ideas whatsoever? Does 'front driveshaft sending the power to the back' sound feasible.

At this rate, virtually the whole drive train will be new!

this is a result - by the time they get finished the entire drive system will have been renewed at their cost, and you will not have to worry about this again.

No idea, but keep suggesting expensive components to them and you’ll soon have a pretty future-proof car. Get them to do the DMF/clutch next before mentioning the those rear half-shafts! Smile 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

Well, I've heard from the garage.

Apparently the fault lies in the gearbox/front diff assembly. Something is broken meaning that it is only sending power to one front wheel, and then of course sending it to the back which are, as a result, the only driving wheels.

A replacement gearbox is awaited ......

Quite how it got sold with such a major fault escapes me .....

Will update when tested/collected

Not a good introduction to LR. Rather wishing I had kept my VW.

Had the car 26 days and have had only one weeks/500 miles sensible use out it.

You can reject this car in 30 days by law very easily but at least its being dealt with and I trust they are giving you a loan car. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

your right, not a good start.

but you have now apparently had all the major 'weak' points of the Freelander changed especially once the gearbox and PTU are changed out so should have many more years of quality FL2 ownership.

As the gearbox is coming out, see if you negotiate a clutch/DMF/slave cylinder renewal as well while its all off the car. Even if you have to pay the cost of the 3 components you shouldn't have to pay the labour charges and it will make good sense to have them done.

Actually Yorky Bob, being 6' 1" and 220 lbs, I rejected their kind offer of an elderly Nissan Micra!

I'm plodding around in my elderly van instead whilst my wife has the benefit of my car (on the basis the FL2 was bought for her).

Is the 30 day refusal statutory?

My fear is, in order to reduce their exposure, they will now argue that the should remove the reckon diff and haldex (despite previously telling me the haldex is Censored ).

I have absolutely asked for a price for the clutch etc replacement.

As I said earlier, this car is in stunning cosmetic condition inside and out having covered only 76k miles. Beggars belief what can actually lie beneath.

the problem with a lot of garages now is that they rely heavily on computer diagnostics so the actual mechanical fault finding skills are lacking.... throwaway society, rip it out and replace and keep fingers crossed.

I had to have the gearbox and transfer unit replaced on my Evoque under warranty, but the initial symptom was a knocking from the nearside rear wheel. The LR Assist guy who came out thought it was a failed shaft or similar but 6k later it was sort of fixed.

I can understand why so many garages and even main dealers end up replacing so many drivetrain items on fl2 . I’ve been pretty good over the 30 years or so at locating strange noises clunks vibrations and rattles on all sorts of different cars but with the FL there are so many different possibilities to give symptoms and often things are hastily mis diagnosed and the problem lies somewhere else as they are all connected and noise,vibration and resonance travel throughout the components . I have an alternating noise/vibration on my 2007 auto coming from the front and can’t be 100% what it is .. I’m leaning towards an excessive amount of play in bearing where pass side driveshaft goes into gearbox but after hours of searching info nobody has ever had this so I’m just hoping for a Big Bang one day then will know what to spend the money on ...

Interestingly mine was a knocking from the rear!

The garage specialises in Freelanders, so I'm surprised it's trial and error replacement.
