England 2010 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Auto Santorini Black
Auto box use

Ok so before I ask this. I am prepared for some jokes.

So I have been driving now for over 15 years but always had a manual car. So my new freelander is an auto and I love it.

First question, when should I be using neutral? At traffic lights etc? Does keeping it in drive cause wear etc?

Secondly park, what exactly is the difference between this and putting it in neural and having the handbrake on?

Lastly if I'm off greenlaning should I use drive or command shift so I can keep it in first etc.

Sorry for what might seem to some as extremely amusing questions.

Thumbs Up

I am sure there will be a wide variety of answers......

But for me:

1. For short stops I hold it on the footbrake. For longer, I use handbrake and neutral. I don't like relying on the handbrake when it is in drive, with 4WD it is not the best handbrake.

2. Park locks the transmission so is best for when engine is going to be turned off. I always use handbrake as well.

3. I have not done much greenlaning but I have left it in drive until there is loose stuff then use the TR program ie GGS. Rarely use Command shift. A matter of preference really.

Now for other opinions..... Whistle

Generally il pop it in neutral if im stopping for more than 15secs. Keeping drive with foot on brake is causing some wear as you can feel the car pulling to go.

Park is similar to neutral. The difference being a pin pops out and locks the box in place in park so car can not roll forward or back. That being said parking pins can fail and you should use handbrake on steep hills, also practise same caution you would with a manual car, turn wheels to curb etc

Cant comment on the last question. The only green my car sees will be a boggy clay ground and if needed it will get mud and rut and il let autobox sort it out. I only use sport or command shift when im overtaking myself, some on here use it all the time on roads, i cant see why as the auto will still force a downshift if it wants to.

1. Never leave my foot on the brake, the box will be fine but lazy Censored do this and blind the driver behind, mines an EPB and holds the car very well.

2. Park is exactly that, there is a locking pawl in the box, do use the handbrake too though.

3. Off road and D will work, however the TR programs will automatically select or prompt you to select Commanshift.

4. 15 years to see the light Laughing

Thanks for all the replies. Has helped a lot.

Yes 15 years and I have finally figured out the pure beauty of an auto. Don't think I'll ever look back.

Agreed, I use command shift because i do not like handing full control to the box. For example, forcing a lower gear and using engine braking when running down hill rather than having to ride the brakes.

The auto box in the Freelander 2 is a very sophisticated twin clutch unit which is designed to disengage when not required so really there is no need to interfere with its operation once drive is selected. Infact your probably hindering operation/efficiency by interfering. It tells you when driver attention is required for on and off road driving and adjust automatically for towing. I'd just leave it to do its thing Thumbs Up MY15

Agree!

The auto is not a slushbox transmission of old. The Freelander's auto has all the advantages of a manual and none of the disadvantages & none of the disadvantages of previous autos or the disadvantages of a DSG.

One of the key things I wanted in my new car was an auto but not a DSG & that ruled out VW. Crawling traffic up hills in Sydney is not an ideal situation if one is planning to keep the car for a very long time. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Not quite...
It's a classic design with torque converter. The torque converter has a locking clutch for better driveability and fuel economy.
Indeed, since last versions, it has a "shift to neutral" during stops, but this is achieved by disengaging 1st gear elements and a new special oil. But the box is 95% the same.
The twin clutch (known as DSG on VW) has problems to cope with such engine torque as FL2s.

But beware that this new design, with automatic neutral engaging and new type of oil (AW 1, unlike the JWS3309 used on the old design), needs changing the oil every 48000 km (30000 miles) ! And the oils are not compatible with each other. There are still LR dealers that are not aware of this and will tell you that the oil won't need changing!
