er thanks for the vaning advice but I'll have to say no thanks. besides just dragging a van there and back would take all weekend. At work

The grouse and Claret at Rowsley or the Peacock at Rowsley used to be good , stayed there a few years back whilst fishing the Wye, The grouse and Claret used to have a CL in its back garden, not sure if it still has one

"From the first minute we walked into the Grouse & Claret we were made to feel very welcome. Everyone, from the Landlord & Landlady & all other staff were polite, pleasant & well mannered. The menu was extensive without being too much or complicated, if you wanted something different it was no problem & you could mix & match if that's what you wanted. Breakfast was excellent & really set you up for the rest of the day. My partner & I stayed here so we could go peak walking, we even thought we might loose a pound or two, but with the portions here there was no chance!!! We would especially recommend the Steak & Ale pie, just don't have any lunch if you want it for dinner. Overall we both recommend this friendly, clean hotel as a base if you like walking or visiting the many country homes in the area. "

The beauty of using Rowsley as a base is it's central location for Bakewell and Matlock with a retail park of sorts for if the weather is poor.The villages around are full of nice pubs especialy Monyash, and the drive down to Rowsley through Chatsworth park is nice.

I do like the sound of it I went to Chatsworth once on a school trip and would like to return. Its either there or Kielder if I like the look of the place on Sunday. But a Kielder holiday wont be very weather proof so I do favour Chatsworth.

Looks like I'm going to my mates chalet in Wales in June so It looks like I'm having patriotic 'buy British' holidays this year. And why not British is indeed best. At work

If you want an excellent meal then either try Fischers at Baslow, they have a website, or Rowley's across the road.
These two restaurants are within 2 miles of Chatsworth or 7 miles of Rowsley. the chef at Fischers is Rupert Rowley, and the eponymous restaurant is his.
