Well this place gets pretty cold in winter and I've never seen anyone bothering to lift their wiper arms. If it's been snowing you'll need to lift them to clean the snow off. It helps that with really low temperatures the blade doesn't freeze to the screen. driving on the right side

It’s not the coldness of the country, so much as the freeze-thaw cycles, the humidity and the type of snow. While UK certainly wouldn’t count as a properly cold country, it is much more common for us to have a wet night followed by freezing conditions around dawn, which leads to the wipers frozen to the windscreen. Having them parked in the vertical position helps reduce the amount of water dammed against them when it freezes, but lifting them off the screen is better still.

The recent cold, easterly continental air-flow has been much colder, but also much drier. The snow has been much lighter in weight, posing less of a problem for parked wipers, but causing more problems on the roads because of drifting. 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

That's because we have thermostats these days.

Sorry to come back on this, but blanking off radiator has fuel saving effects on both a much quicker warm up and reduced under bonnet (turbulent) air.

Before you notice, I will however admit to fitting mud flaps to my (aerodynamic?) FL2.

I have resurrected this thread as I have just fallen foul of the first real frosty morning.

When I came out of the house a couple of days ago my FL2 was really frosted up. No problem thought I, just jump in the car and press the Programmed Defrost button.

Unfortunately the Auto-Wipers started at the same time and ripped a piece of my wiper blade. Admittedly the blades were a bit old and thin, but, in the future, I will be raising my blades off window when frost is expected.

Followed advice on forum and fitted Bosch Aero blades, very pleased with them.

On cold mornings, I will be checking blades are free before turning on ignition.

PS On the subject of auto wipers, my first car, 1961 Ford side valve, had wipers that automatically sped up when you released the accelerator. They also used no electricity. Unfortunately they tended to slow and stop as the car speed increased and the manifold pressure dropped. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Lovely vacuum wipers,press the throttle and nothing! Great invention faster you go the slower the wipe!
If you think they where bad, how about vacuum assisted hydraulic brakes fitted to lorries.
My TK Bedford and my Thames Trader had them..........God knows why, they where bloody useless.
