Speaking as an MOT tester, I can’t see how they are going to do that.

So, the emission test doesn’t always detect it and the visual check is not adequate so how do you think we are going to check it? Remove the exhaust and check it internally? Never going to happen. Apart from the fact that you can’t remove ANYTHING from a car to carry out the test, the cost and potential problems of an in-depth check on a DPF make the statement that they are going to tighten up the DPF inspection in the MOT test a load of old ball cocks! Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Equipment currently exists to detect the particulates, that's how information about this form of air pollution is gathered, so it won't take much imagination to design a device that can be used to test for diesel particulates to be stuck on the exhaust of a car to test it.

That’s very interestingly worded, considering that what they are suggesting will mean that their customers will be committing an offence as soon as it’s driven on a public road.

1000 fine for cars & 2500 fine for heavier vehicle if the DPF has been removed. section 42 road traffic act, construction and use.

Fines in the future may be calculated on the mileage the car has covered as well without a cat/DPF

New software is being released for analysers for the MOT.

its actually very easy to spot cats or DPFs removed, using heat seeking camera's, takes a few seconds, live data looking at Pressure sensor values, exhaust temp probe readings, all a dead give away Jaguar x-type sport gone

Plenty of people out there offering software removal of DPF as well as physical removal or disabling. But MOT testers are never going to be able to pick up on that in the real world, they don't have the time and/or equipment to test.

Reminds me of people who used to sell empty VCU or IRD blanking plates for the FL1.... visual inspection would show a full 4WD system but it would never work....

Are there really owners that aren’t bothered about wrecking pollution control equipment, purely on the basis that they don’t believe they are going to get caught? As each and every one of us and our families need to breath, it seems to be in our own self interests to keep this stuff working.

Still can’t see them coming up with a workable solution. All they will say at the moment is that they are thinking of adding another RfR (Reason for Refusal- failure to you and me) of 'obviously modified’. That’s a joke. Many people cut open a DPF, clean it or replace it and re-weld it. Obviously, some just remove them but.....who is to say whether there is one inside? You cannot fail what you cannot see and there are quite a few cars that have undertrays where you cannot see anything. You can be sure that that will be challenged on day one if it ever comes out. Would you like your car failed because it has a weld on the DPF that the MOT tester didn’t like the look of?

It is interesting reading the comments on the MOT tester’s Forum. They certainly have a heck of a job determining if a DPF has been destroyed or not. Some complain of being targeted for this, yet when they make complaints about companies blatantly offering this service to end users, nothing is done.

I can’t think of a parallel to the openly advertised, blatantly illegal and anti social, removal of emissions equipment, without the perpetrators and their customers facing the enforcement of some serious legal consequences.

It’s not even as if these people are hard to find, simply google “DPF removal” and go and pay them a visit!
