Got a call from my mechanic mid afternoon. He told me I had to replace the starter($550 parts and labour). He checked everything else and it was fine. He even updated my software. Hopefully get a call tomorrow for pickup.

Glad you got sorted, pity about the $550.  Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.
Freelander now gone.

I completely agree, its always nice to know what worked in the end.

And Akmega has been very good about keeping us updated, its probably because he is Canadian (its been my experience that they are almost always very polite, considerate and friendly)

And I am not the only one that feels this way and I can prove it: I was boarding a flight to Toronto and I assisted another passenger getting her bag into the over head bin, she thanked me and when she sat down I hear her say to her traveling companion "......those Canadians are always so nice....." Note: I didn't correct her.

So there you have it: the starter motor in the 3.2 will last about 8 years and Canadians are really nice.

Haha, thank you guys. Y'all been very helpful and special shout out to Don. The car starts so much better now and the weather is starting to dip again. Another question would be I had a remote starter in there which I disconnected after the starter failed. Is it ok for me to put it back. Thanks.

I don't see why you couldn't put the remote starter back.

If it were my LR2 my only concern would be the drain that the remote starter puts on the battery with the engine off.

If you drive >30 minutes to work and >30 minutes home and you drive 5 days a week I can't imagine it being a problem.

Conversely if you take trips (for business or pleasure) and they are more than 2 weeks long then the extra load from the remote starter may be a concern. Do you happen to know the specification for the remote starting circuit? (it might be called: leakage current, parasitic load, drainage current or something similar)

Did you notice that your LR2 starts faster with the new starter motor?

When I replaced mine this was the first thing that I noticed.

Yeah thats the first thing i noticed, it started really quick sounded like a machine gun. So far everything is well , sometimes the engine cranks longer if i start the vehicle after few hours or first thing in the morning. When i push the start button first and wait like 5 seconds and then brake push start, theres no longer cranks just regular. Not sure what that means.

My freelander 2 from 2007 wont start .Message > steering collumn locked.Please Help

Sorry for the late reply.

I haven't had the problem that you are describing.

But I have read about it on this forum and on the Volvo Forum (the steering column lock is common to both)

I did a quick search but I couldn't find a good link (I'll add one if I do)

Things to consider

1. Is the battery charged? Above 12.4 Volts?

2. The lock can become jammed by the wheel (try moving the wheel back and fourth) I think that the lock releases as you dock the key so you may need someone to move the steering wheel and someone to dock the key. Can anyone confirm this?

3. I do remember a post where a Freel2 member fixed the problem by driving on rough roads

4. If all else fails you will likely have to take apart the steering column and replace the locking mechanism.

One last thought you could send a private message to Alex Pescaru and ask for his help. He is very knowledgeable about the workings off the Freelander 2.

* count to three

* step on the brake and hold it down

* count to three

* press the start button

* select gear and release the brake

The pauses between steps are important the various computers are doing things and they need time

If the engine starts and runs rough then shut it down and remove the key and do the steps in order shown above
