Engine running cold - I think!

Hi all,

I've had a problem with my mpg dropping quite significantly over the last couple of months. More than usual for the cold weather. The temp gauge doesn't seem to move from the centre however if I put the heater on full for a couple of minutes it goes down to almost cold. I've also got an obd reader and the coolant temp is only running at 77 degrees. It seems to go between 74 and 81 on tick over it sits at 77 but even at 70mph on a long run it doesn't go much above 80.

That seems quite cool to me... Anyone else have any idea what the 'norm' is?

Cheers

I need to check mine using the OBDII to be sure what temperature it actually runs at

I update this post later to include that information.

Note: the needle on mine is always horizontal when warmed up, if that helps

Good Luck

Paul

If you could that would be great. Mine takes an age to get to the middle (I have a digital gauge) but drops as soon as the heater is on. I'm only curious as I just find 77 very cold.

Cheers

My temp gauge was dropping after a run up the motorway. Stayed at just under half way then would go down to around a third of the way up. Thermostat was the problem.

My petrol powered 3.2 shows 189F on the ODBII data after a 35 minute drive in traffic

Outside temperature is 59F

I think the thermostat on my Rover is 190F

If that’s the case then everything is working fine for me

Note the needle on the gauge is just below horizontal as the other poster indicated

I’m not sure about the thermostat on the Diesel if that’s what you have

I agree with the last post that a bad thermostat can cause what your experiencing

Good luck

Paul
