Jack wheel up and check CV joints on drive shaft. Look for signs of damaged CV gaiters that might have let water/dirt in. Also check wheel bearings. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Any noise or clunk means that something is worn or loose causing unwanted movement and noise. The Freelander has a pretty conventional suspension set up so it would be a case of jacking up the front and checking for movement in all the usual places. I.E rock the wheel to check for movement in wheel bearing, bottom ball joint, track rod end,use a pry bar to check for movement in rubber bushes on track control arm, anti roll bar, also check for movement in drop links, and as mentioned drive shafts/cv joints.

in my experience of cars, a knocking clunking at under 20mph is irritating and up to now has in the last 2 cars been the drop links which are also called anti roll bars, my local garage just did mine in December, they charged £28 for the parts, ie both sides. Labour costs on top of course. |

I had similar symptoms to this, turns out the N/S front road spring had broken about 2 coils up from the bottom support dish on the strut. Its easy to check in a few minutes with the wheel on full lock, just make sure you tug the springs, if it is broken it will soon be evident. Cost me just under £240 for an OEM pair fitted at a local garage if it does happen to be that. |

Just had mot and got a warning for bottom ball joint rubber, there is no play in the ball joint.is it possible to jack up the truck and support the strut on a jack and drop the ball joint out and replace the rubber without take the drive shaft out.i would Jack it up and drop the disc down onto a wooden block to take the presure of the arm .anyone done this before.

I had a front end clunk that turned out to be a worn roll bar drop link. All sorted now |

Corrosion on the spring, I had to replace both rears on the wife's ML320cdi as they had both snapped at the top. Common problem apparently |

Coincidentally! The lowest ring on the drivers front spring just broke on mine! As with you, corrosion started at a crack and in -10 C weather, let go on a Ottawa bump. I’m going to replace both front end springs.

My sister has an SLK and goes through at least two springs a year front and back for the past three years - it is a well know issue with these. Thanks. I suppose I’ll add “check springs” to my checklist. Guy Pensa
