When ever there is an end of line production, there are vehicles stored in a compound.
These Freelander 2 's would have been stored in order for dealers to promote Discovery Sport and Evoque. If you really insisted, even after the dealer had told you the FL2 had been phased out, and the dealer thought he was going to loose the sale, you would be offered 'the very last' of the FL2's from the stored buffer stock.

That's a new one on me, I certainly wish that had been true when I'd been looking for a last of the line D4. Unfortunately, LR insisted that any remaining stock was pre-registered in late 2016 and they were all sold off pretty quickly, as used stock, before the first D5's arrived.

I see that this one found a very lucky first owner on 24/3/2016

Tigger, when the salesman told you that ...... did his lips move .... Rolling with laughter

same reason you see 07 plated FL1's, when the early FL2's came out on a 06 plate.

D4s were always going to sell out quickly with the negative response to the D5 shape many people in the market for a new disco decided to buy a new 4 rather than a 5. I suppose there were plenty who didn't fancy changing to the DS and bought a last of line Fl2..certainly when I was buying my Fl2 from the local main dealer I was disappointed by how similar every other car in the showroom looked. Not "landrover enough". Gerry McGovern is not appealing to traditional customers. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Well, if they were lying, they were lying in unison at every dealership that I tried across the entire country, from Cornwall to Scotland.

Considering that I was offering to buy the first new Landmark, with a light interior, that I could find (and made it very clear that, no, a D5 absolutely would not do, irrespective of discount), you'd have thought that one of them would crack if they were deliberately holding something back.

It was an interesting time. As soon as the D4's were pre-registered, the Landmarks were discounted very heavily and sold very quickly, until the panic set in that they'd have nothing to sell for months until the D5 arrived. Once the panic set in, the discounts dried up very quickly. Some new owners of the pre-registered D4's were even advertising them, several months later, for more than they'd paid for them.

Not sure how it went with the FL2 - DS transition; at least I had the chance to move to a D4 when the FL2 had no option of an adequate direct replacement.

Something similar happened with the Ford Cortina when the "jelly mould" Ford Sierra was launched. Apparently lots of requests for Cortinas. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Pausing for a moment to remember the "stunning" early Mk1 Sierra, especially in its Scum trim level Shocked

I think that someone's forgotten to fit any wheels to it; it is just skidding along on its brake discs, isn't it?! Rolling Eyes

They did evolve into a pretty nice looking car, some of the late model sapphires were pretty nicel. That basic black bumpered version is pretty horrible. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

I used an early Sierra as a company car for a few years and there was a stability problem at speed. It was something to do with the fact that the car was one of the first to be designed from the outset to have a low drag factor. If you were going down the outside lane of a motorway and passed a lorry, you had trouble keeping the car going in a straight line in air turbulence and it was quite scary to drive. The fix was initially to lower the front tyre pressures but later they fitted some mouldings to the rear windows which seemed to make a difference. If you look at the back end of an FL2 there is what looks suspiciously to me like a similar modification.
