Both fobs stopped working after battery replacement

Both my fobs used to ok. After replacing the car battery both started working only intermittently, and then stopped altogether. I tried a "hard reset" and at least one of the fobs worked ok for a few times, and then stopped again.

Not sure whether I should try replacing the batteries in the fobs, or whether it's an electric problem in the car. The fobs are old enough so that a need for a battery replacement would not be surprising, but it does seem surprising that both developed a problem at the same time, that the problem developed right after I replaced the car battery, and that a hard reset made a difference (though a very temporary difference). I would be very grateful for advice on this!

One of mine stopped working after 3 years (well I got the "low battery in remote" message). I swapped to the spare remote which had not been used at all during that period (apart from a test unlocking when I got the car new). Within 2 days I got the low battery message for the spare. Changed both batteries for fresh ones and both now work fine. This was for the non docking remote (the one which just needs to be inside the car). So I suspect that time as well as usage will have an impact on the functioning. Pop a couple of new batteries in and all should be well. FL2 Metropolis, Loire Blue, ebony/ivory

Noticed the OP'S car is 08 model. I thought all pre 14 models (?)had "docked" keys that were a nightmare to change battery's on in fact battery's were rechargeable when docked. Question MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

That's correct Tenet, I am wondering if the issue is to do with the CAR battery changeover,
although I cannot help with problem I will be watching as I've just ordered my new battery and mines an 08. Neutral DAVE.

Thanks everyone! It seems the consensus is that the link with changing the car battery could be a coincidence, and the best bet is to change the battery in the fobs. I guess it's time to get a replacement battery and a soldering kit...

I finally got the battery and soldering iron, and it did solve the problem! Smile

Opening the fob proved harder than I expected, but the soldering part was easy, despite this being my first time soldering.

One thing I cannot understand is that the old battery still had a voltage of about 2.98V --- very near the 3V it's supposed to be (the new battery was 3.02V). But whatever the reason, it worked! Very Happy

Glad you got it sorted - these cars can be Censored when voltages are off by even a small and otherwise acceptable margin. No Longer the owner of a 2013MY Fuji White GS

Not wanting to pour cold water, but I wonder if there could be a problem with the charging circuit (for the fobs). It's odd that both went at once. Hopefully you've cured the problem, but if the new batteries also stop working then that's the next thing to look at. btw, the fobs only charge if inserted the right way up. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

Don't forget that a voltmeter it is designed to take as little current as possible from the circuit being measured so unless it is on a battery testing setting (where it simulates a test load) then you might get a decent reading from the battery just sitting there but when it's delivering current the voltage might be a lot lower. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
