obd2 bluetooth

I have just got an android phone and fancied getting one of those cheap and cheerful obd2 bluetooth devices from ebay or amazon.

Does anyone have any recommendation on any particular device?

I know they are cheap, it is just for a bit of interest and I dont want anything fancy or costing tens of pounds.

Thanks
Simon

I have had one cheap ELM BT dongle working OK with my FL2 MY 07.
It connects to Android phone with application Torque

I have seen warnings that the quality varies with the cheap BT ELM's.
Hopefully you get a good one

Modern Dongle answers?

All the info I have found on my searches seem to be old.

Please can someone advise me on a suitable OBD2 Bluetooth Dongle, which is small enough not to get in the way, and will communicate with a Samsung S7 phone. (FL2 2014 SD4 Metropolis)

If possible I would like an application that will record a string of engine sensor data which can be looked at and studied later.

I am not sure what is possible so if this is the wrong question please tell me what is possible.

You'll probably want an ELM327 Mini like these;

https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_...lm327+mini

And the Torque app by Ian Hawkins (for Android)

https://torque-bhp.com/

I use this setup for both hobby and work and generally its an excellent combo. It's not as good as commercial kit (such and Vectors CANalyzer) but its so cheap, easy and pocket sized. I actually have a couple so I always have one to hand.

I have found on my 13my FL2 that if I use certain settings AND log lots of information at the same time, it can cause the high speed/Power Train bus to become over loaded which in my case resulted in all manner of excitement with the auto box!

It's also worth noting that the ELM327 chipset was cloned many years ago so nearly all adapters you buy are clones which don't have the full set of commands. Genuine ELM chips have been updated many times since they where cloned so if you need better performance/full set of commands then you'll want to hunt around for a genuine chipset. I just use clones, but I do have bench test equipment with genuine chips.

Heres an example of what you can get. This is off a VAG product, recording 38 channels in total at 1Hz
