Hi everyone

Had our Freelander for 6 months now and not had a peep of trouble including a 2,000 mile trip to France & Italy but the last week we have had a strange rumbling, judder, vibration coming from the back end. Tried putting it into neutral and freewheeling but still does it.

Problem is, it's very intermittent so I'm sure if I take it to be checked over it won't do it until I'm on the way back home. We first thought is was the road surface but happened a few times now on different roads.

Just wondered if anybody can shine a light on what it might be. It's an 08 plate with only 52K miles and in the main drives beautifully.

Try switching the wheels front to back, it could be wear on the tyres.

or bulge when tyres hot?

Check rear brake shoes (assuming it's a pre 2013 model). 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Interestingly I have just switched to my winter wheels today (Nokian Weatherproofs) and I an now getting a rear end rumble.

Land Rover L359 Freelander 2: rear differential noise
In November 2010, Land Rover issued service bulletin LTB00342/2010 for Land Rover Freelander 2 vehicles with serial numbers from 00212 onwards. In these vehicles, there may be excessive humming noise and/or rumble, or a high-pitched whine from the rear differential assembly. According to the service bulletin, the cause of may be pinion tail bearing spalling caused by subsurface material deformation as a result of static overload. To fix, the differential pinion shaft needed to be replaced.
