A predictable answer
so when your new tyres (8mm) are down to 6mm you bin them?

and if you get a puncture in your almost brand new £180 tyre do you have it repaired or replaced
The ebay link I posted looks like vandelism on brand new tyres (tech screw srewed into the tread and no wear to screw head)

Its a difficult subject to discuss honestly, a lot like cameras. there is massive tyre snobbery
As in I like brand xxx, swear by them, Oh no says my mate there c*** i use brand yyyy etc etc
There must be 10 major manufacturers
another 10 well known second tier and a fair few weird names often described as made in the same factory as xxxx
I can remember 30 years ago putting yokahamas on my frogeye and people telling me that they where japanese rubbish. Top value brand now!!

Being very candid I want my family in the safest car possible and bearing in mind you rely on 4 small patches of rubber to keep you on the road then I buy the best new tyres I can afford.

I would never ever buy second hand tyres especially with advertised faults, however well they may have been repaired.

Just to add another thought into the mix! Unless you are buying a car brand new then when you buy a used car then you are also buying the 2nd hand tyres that it comes fitted with. If they look to be in good condition with plenty of tread then very few people I think are going to go to the expense of replacing them for piece of mind even although they have no idea of their history or how they have been used or abused. Whistle

and that is also why I usually replace pads and discs on any out of manufacturer warranty car i buy and look very carefully at the tyres and replace if in any doubt.

If they are that good why doesn't the seller repair them and sell them for more? Common sense isn't very common.

had a bad experience many years ago, tread peeled off two new tyres less than 10 miles running bought cheap from a dubious source, Mr. Green Mr. Green Mr. Green

only buy new tyres now from proper outlets, so I can then get my free solicitor to sue them from my hospital bed if they go wrong .....

If you knew the answer was predictable why ask ?

However to answer your question . No , I would not bin my own tyres at 6mm if I had owned them from new. But if I had say damaged one more than a simple puncture or thought I had damaged one I would change it. Then no doubt one of the garage staff would sell the tyre on eBay to a bargain hunter. When I bought the Freelander at 2 years old for my wife, first step was straight to ATS and 5 Pirelli Scorpions , then I knew she was safe.

As I said my life is worth more than the saving a few bob, but it's you neck and your money so bid away Thumbs Up 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

Over the decades I've had about 15 punctures though the thread area and most have not been repairable.

So maybe of the five tyres, 1 will actually be repairable, then dispose the other 4 tyres. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
