I would also strongly recommend a Terraclean.

My wife has a 56 reg Peugeot 207 with 48k miles that only does about 3k miles/year. It's very tidy and in very good condition. We were at a garage (a Ford dealer) getting fuel and I walked over and had a chat with one of the car salesman about possibly replacing it. He asked for the mileage and walked around it and we went inside for him to look up the trade in value. He said that the problem was that it was worth perhaps £1200 and that if there was a major fault costing say £500 then it probably wouldn't be worth fixing as it wouldn't increase the value. He added that if you bought a similar car costing about £5-6k you would get something that wasn't really much better than what you have now and that to make a change worthwhile you need to be adding say £10k. We have known the guy for some years (kids were at school together) and he basically advised that we should just run it and spend the minimum on keeping it going.

Blocking the EGR should not in theory make a difference to performance. BUT at that sort of mileage it is very likely that the valve has got sticky and may not be operating properly. You probably would not notice as the deterioration in performance can be gradual. I'm fairly sure the valve on my SD4 was starting to stick at 3 years old (I got rid of it). Before paying to have it blocked off electronically, I'd fit one of the cheap blocking plates that are much discussed on here, to see whether there is any difference. Your car is old enough for that not to be a problem. If you notice a big difference then the valve is probably not working properly anyway, so your emissions will already be up the spout, and you can decide whether to block permanently or replace the valve. If no difference you can remove the plate. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone 300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease 200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France FR2 TD4 GS - Gone FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge. |
