Fraser trip

Just got back from a quick trip to Fraser Island from Sydney. Drove solo all the way through to Sandy Cape. The little car handled the Indian Head and Ngkala Rocks bypasses easily. The Ngkala Rocks bypass had me a little worried as it was quite soft, steep and rutted, no room for error being on my own. The little car continues to please and amaze me even with 250k on the clock.

Parked with all my friends at Sandy Cape on Anzac Day -

That's quite a nice kiddy's sand pit you have there Mike and a neat little water feature at the far end.

I found this video on youtube that pretty much covers where I went. It's a good trip to do, Ngkala Rocks separates the faint hearted out of the crowd. There was nobody up there when I was there.

Yep, Frasier Island is a fantastic place to visit. My wife and I have been three times now in our FL2. Twice we've managed to get all the way to Sandy Cape. The Ngkala Rocks track can be rather challenging but it is well worth the effort.

Already planning our next trip.

Close enough to 1200kms each way so 2 days there, 3 days on the island and 2 days back. Not ideal but work won't allow any better.
Hello Vesko, I didn't do a lot of the interior tracks, went through to Central Station but that's about it. My aim was Sandy Cape and it's a long drive that has to be timed with the tides. The beach was impassable at high tide in a lot of places so had to sit it out and wait. It's amazing how the sand completely changes from year to year, North Ngkala Rocks for instance are nowhere to be seen. They are on the map but you can't find them. They used to be a fair obstacle right in the middle of the beach. Either they are completely covered by sand, or they are out under water.
Something that doesn't change is the number of Euro backpackers there. I had to pull a bunch of German kids out of a bog at Orchid Beach. They had their tyres at 35psi, so did well to get that far. I'm sure Vesko would have made the most of a car load of bikini girls in distress. I did find it hard to concentrate with bare arses in my face. Very Happy

Quick thinking & improvisation he would use bikinis for tow rope! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

253k kms after that trip. They've been hard kms too, it's seen some pretty rough stuff. I have to compliment LR on the build quality as the roads outback are terrible and the car still doesn't rattle. My mechanic commented last service that it doesn't seem tired at all yet.

253k kms is very impressive, that makes nearly 40 000 kms a year! And your FL2 looked new last time I saw it. Very impressive! 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 SE

Question regarding tracks

Sorry for the thread resurrection!

I'm heading to Fraser Island soon and was wondering whether anyone who has been there could tell me about the tracks going from the Western side to Central Station and the tracks leading to and from Lake McKenzie?

Are they diffficult to pass? Would it be easier to come up the East Coast and then into Central Station?

Thanks!

Sorry about the delay, I've been driving around New Zealand for two weeks. Very Happy
The inland tracks on Fraser are just narrow with a lot of up and down humps, they aren't difficult, just slow. You have to be wary of tour operators who think they own the tracks. I've only ever done the east coast so can't comment on the west side except to say there is a stinger alert for the Irikandji jellyfish in place at the moment so don't swim on that side. Half an inch long and very deadly. Central Station is around 20-30 minutes from the east coast.

I just moved to Noosa, from Sydney, and I'm itching to take my '13 up there. This fills me with confidence. Still.. I wish I had another inch or so - do you think it's needed?

I'm currently on 19", with new Goodyear Efficient Grips.

I'll be taking a compressor, camping gear, tracks and a shovel.
