Anyone able to help with a turbo question?

Freelander 2/ 2013/ 2.2L/SD4 XS/ 63,000 miles

I put this in for its service today. For a few weeks I’ve been getting a (very) occasional, but strong smell of exhaust, as best as I can remember it usually only happens after pulling away at a junction when the engine is warmed up.

Yesterday the smell came back, very strong. I was near to home and got my son to rev it through – nothing from the rear exhaust, nothing coming out underneath (I thought perhaps I had a blown exhaust). No smell outside the vehicle, it’s only apparent in the cab. However, when I looked under the bonnet while it was being revved, there was a puff of smoke coming from low down on the right of the engine. I’ve had no loss of power, no engine warning lights, just the smell.

It was already booked in for its service today and I mentioned it to the garage. Just had a call from them – they’re not sure yet, but have found some evidence of soot round the turbo. They’re keeping it tonight for their technician to do a full diagnostic tomorrow, but called to warn it might need a new turbo.

So, I was wondering:
- does this sound like a candidate for a turbo replacement? I was wondering if it might just be a pipe/hose problem (I’m no car expert);
- how long can you normally expect a turbo unit to last. It’s 4 years old, reasonable mileage, fully serviced and purchased at 2 years old from a main LR dealer;
- if worst comes to the worst, the garage thinks a new turbo would be around £2k. I suspect LR would find a way to wriggle out of the 2 year warranty (I have about 2 months left to run on it). Does £2k sound like the going rate?

Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

I'm of the mind a code reader would have logged the actual fault, without that code its guesswork on the real cause.
If it's covered under warranty let them do whatever they seem is required to fix it, no matter the cost if its covered.

If its not, look at the turbo/intercooler hose connections. Loose jubilee clip on mine did just the same, a quick nip up and wipe the excess oil thats blown out with a rag, job done.

Thanks MarcusFordus. I'm keeping my fingers crossed it's a hose/pipe/connector problem and not a £2000 bill. I guess the garage felt they had to warn me, but now I'm spending the night on tenterhooks!
