FL2 Rear Diff - Wear & Tear or failure

Have a 07 FL2 import. Bought off a dealer. The service I got done this week (after about 5-6k kms driving) says rear diff noisy recommendation recon soon. So my question is do people consider this wear and tear or a failure? The vehicle has done 70,000kms. I am asking because the definition makes a difference to whether this can be claimed on insurance.

To me it is a failure since I had the vehicle inspected and it was not identified therefore must have developed since ownership.

Any thoughts, advice, recommendations are appreciated, cheers

I sold ours with the original diff fitted at 185k miles, that's 297,000km
She had an oil seal fitted at 2000 miles, then just oil changed every 60,000 miles.

So 70,000km is premature failure in my book. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

Known premature failure so not wear and tear and not at those sort of KM's.

Search on here for others plight and you find its like a teenager with spots, you get rid of one and another 10 turn up. Rolling Eyes FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Mine had a new transfer box at 40,000 miles and and a new diff at 46000 miles. Its the luck of the draw

Our 59 plate FL2 (owned from new) suffered the dreaded but apparently all too common rear diff bearing issue. Although low miles for the year (38000 miles) and full LR service history LR would not consider any sort of goodwill gesture. Interestingly whilst not acknowledging an issue with these bearing, LR did issue a technical advice note to dealers! In our case the main dealer offer a small reduction (discount) for removing old unit and fitting a new one. But even at this discount the bill would be apx £2000. We chose and independent specialist to remove, replace all bearings on the rear diff and also service the haldex unit.

In your case it would be worthwhile discussing with your insurance - but don't forget the haldex!

For more information see www.bellengineering.co.uk

kind regards

Paul

Specified service interval = 150,000km or every 10 years, for differential oil change.
Some might consider that to be quite a long time to wait, before a first oil change.
There's a relatively small amount of oil in the diff, considering the weight of the car and that many are used for towing.
No drain plug.
I've had my diff oil changed twice (remove the unit and empty it out), and filters cleaned / replaced. The quick brown fox

Very common failure . Wife's FL2 had the diff rebuilt last year at 50,000 miles : 80,000 in km . At an independent it was circa £800 rebuild. When you get the job done pay the extra and get the haldex serviced while its all stripped down . That's another common failure you can prevent , it would be daft not to . 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

No Deano , next door at Stonelake , although you would be forgiven for failing to see when one ended and the other started. Stonelake is run by the family who used to own Copley before the big franchises gobbled it up. It's a nice setup . 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership
