bottle jack

i'm thinking of getting a bottle jack to go with the new spare wheel i have purchased.could anyone tell me what height the jack would have to extend to be able to change the wheel and also what lifting weight would be safe

Might be best going for a defender one. They have a nice curved bit at the top rather than a flat top. I say defender you could get a disco one as they are usually about a million pounds cheaper because it does not have the word defender in it which some sellers seem to think it is a license to hike the price to what ever you like. But if you can't find a disco one either the Mercedes sprinter van is the same but usually coloured blue and they are all for higher sitting vehicles. GS Sd4 2012

I can't tell you exactly what height you'll need, but remember to allow for the fact that you may be jacking from a flat tyre (which will lower that corner of the car) but still need to get to a height which will allow a fully-inflated replacement. If you search on 'bottle jack' a few threads come up - there may be some useful information there.

As for capacity, 2 tonne would be fine for the odd wheel change although you may find higher-capacity jacks have higher lifts.

A Defender jack is a good suggestion, but check that it will go under a Freelander with a flat first - the Defender jacking points are somewhat higher IIRC.

The defender/ disco jacks are surprisingly small but they have a two stage lift. I wish I kept it before a sold the defender. It was a bargain and a handy size. GS Sd4 2012

try army surplus places for a bottle jack

Anchor Supplies in Ripley, Derbyshire used to sell them
I think Witham SV near Grantham might as well and possibly Field Textiles Ltd

yes I scrapped the scissor jack supplied by LR. and the wheel wrench ( as it twisted and snapped on me) ..... now run a Disco bottle jack and spider wrench.
