Auto with bad vibes cured with a software reset

Just though I would share this with all auto owners .. my 2007 auto developed bad transmission vibrations especially when in gears 4.5.6 , best described as if you went from 2nd to 5th in a manual that kind of labouring vibration felt through the whole car . I've changed a rear diff on my brothers fl2 and although that was noisy as hell it didn't cause any bad vibes so ruled that out. I checked all driveline for play and found a slight movement in prop centre coupling so accepted I need to change it . I mentioned this to the gearbox shop where I had a gbox flush done months ago and he said it probably wants a software refresh , so still convinced prop was on way out I had it refreshed and wow what a difference, its remarkable, gear changes are now unnoticeable and silky smooth and all vibrations gone . Apparently if your battery is on its way out it can cause software issues like this so things are not always what they seem .. well chuffed but guess I'll probably be forking out for a new battery soon ..

But software doesn't deteriorate. I was talking to my LR dealer last week about whether I needed an auto box s/w update. He said that in my case probably not, a s/w update involves not just the update but cycling the gearbox through a series of actions at normal running temperature so that the s/w learns and stores details about the characteristics of that particular box. He claimed that it would be about an hour's work if I decided to go ahead. So do you know if this cycling was done to your car? In which case it might not even have needed the update?

Yes that could sound right it took around 20 mins and did involve a lot of ignition on then off select different gears then on / off etc etc . They did say after 15-20 miles it would get even better as it learns but with no warning messages or anything I would have never thought to have had it done . Think it's something to do with torque converter locking up when it should maintain a degree of slip ....
