I would try a hard reset. May not work, but doesn't cost you anything! |

Do you not have recovery insurance? The vehicle is illegal without headlights, so they should repair or recover.

Thanks for the answers guys. I found it by luck. I opened up the passenger compartment fuse box and gave everything a push to ensure the fuses and components were all seated properly--no change, then did the same for the engine compartment box and tried again this time the lights came on. I can only guess that it was something to do with the main beam relay and/or a fuse which feeds through it. We had a bad crash with a deer a few months ago and although everything was fixed and working afterwards maybe a fuse or relay or one of the electronic components was slightly jarred out of position and then driving on the roads here completed the disconnection.

It didn't happen in Switzerland, it was on the way back to the UK in March, driving through France at about 80 mph.
