Noise from engine bay when engine off?

Just did a short drive, a couple of miles, and as I pulled into my drive I heard a rubbing noise from the engine. It sounded like a fan rubbing against something or an electric motor. When I turned the ignition off it was still making the noise definitely coming from the front of the engine. Both cooling fans were stopped, it sounds as though the noise is coming from the fan area. It is a 2010 Freelander2 TD4. I took the key out, after a few minutes it stopped. 10 minutes later I put the key back in, did not start engine and it started making the noise again, take the key out, it continues and then stops a couple of minutes later. Any ideas??
Supposed to be going on a driving holiday next weekend!
Thanks.

if it is a high pitch noise (and stops with a "clack" type sound), its the EGR valve and is nothing to worry about.

If it's at the front of the engine I would say it's more likely to be the throttle body.

Yeah, sounds like the throttle body gears have stripped. Fairly common fault. I had one go on mine once, also just before I was going away for a week in it. Bought the throttle body but didn't have time to fit it so took it away with me in case it gave me problems. No problem driving the car and I eventually got round to fitting it on some time after we got back from holiday. Do a search on throttle body on this site. Plenty of info. About £100 to buy and an hours labour to fit. If you are a halfway competent diyer it's a fairly straightforward job to do. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Present: Audi A3 S Line.
