Australia 2010 Freelander 2 TD4_e S Manual Zermatt Silver
Dodgy Fuel gauge

Our 2010 TD4e has had an intermittent problem for a while (that now seems to have become permanent), whereby the fuel gauge only indicates a max of just over 1/2 a tank, even if it's brimmed. The tank has taken a few impacts off road, and LR are telling me that this has displaced the fuel sender and thus I'm getting incorrect readings on the dashboard. They suggested that a complete tank/pump/sender replacement would be necessary to fix the problem. They had a lovely quote for me to fix the issue...

Is their proposed solution completely necessary to rectify the problem?

A follow-up question - will the ECU cut the engine if the car 'thinks' that it's about to run dry? If not, then I'll stop worrying about it entirely and just drive off the trip distance between fuel stops. If so, then I guess in a country as big as Australia, an effective range of 300 km isn't going to get me very far, so I guess I'll need to look at getting it fixed somehow.

Any help much appreciated!

A number of people have reported that a "hard reset" has cured this issue, and that is cheap to do so try this first.

A hard reset is disconnecting the battery and then connecting the +ve and -ve leads to ensure a complete discharge - do a search on this for a full explanation.
