Definitive Puddle Lamp Retrofit (not Approach Lamps)

Rightly/Wrongly I wanted to clear up some ambiguity around this topic as there is other threads which go over this but are all over the place and there's quite a lot of confusion around Puddle Lamps and Approach Lamps. Also would like to memorialize wiring diagrams and information for others.

Firstly, this is an Approach Lamp;

And this is where a puddle lamp should be underneath the bottom of the door card on both driver and passenger front doors. As you can see currently I do no have a puddle lamp for some reason and about to retrofit.

The puddle lamp wiring is part of the entire single wiring loom in the door (as i've been informed and see schematic below) and is linked into the door module therefor if you are planning on using any type of LED replacement globe then it will have to be Canbus rated or have a resistor ballast connected in parallel to work. Some LED's have resistor circuits integrated. Not fitting a resistor of some type will result in the LED flashing once on activation and then nothing or nothing at all. A normal filament W5W will work as designed as the "door module" recognizes the current drain of the 5w globe. The wiring from the door module to the puddle lamp is part of the entire door wiring loom and as such is under 1 part description number 14A584 or 14790. (refer part schematic below)

As far as the light itself there is a range of option from OE, LED and projector style. Your choice should all work.

When you have completed the installation of your puddle lamp don't be surprised if it still does not work. In most cases you'll have to instruct (for use of a better word) the "door module" that a puddle lamp is connected which either requires you to go to your nearest LR dealers and they will activate with the diagnostic equipment or if you have your own diagnostic tool ie GAP Diagnostic etc

That pretty much covers the whole subject.

Now, could someone help me!

As I haven't taken my door card off as yet and would rather only do once to do the retrofit, can anyone confirm that the wire for the puddle lamp is just sitting there as indicated by the wiring schematic. Would be useful to know.

Thanks guys/girls, hope my research helps other members. MY15

Broken pictures

Hey Stuart, Any idea what happened to the pictures on this thread.

Tried programming on the lights in the bottom of the door, I used approach lights because in SDD it says "puddle lamps, mirror" which is somewhat confusing Smile

So puddle lamps are in door and approach lamps in wing mirrors?

From a “serious” point of view......my point was even though it’s a “puddle light” in l359 In the Ccf it’s called “Warning Lamp” most likely because Volvo May have used that feature as a “door warning light”.
Both the Puddle light/Warning light and side repeaters are controlled via the door modules as such some features have different names to actually what they do as they may be different from platform to platform.....in L359 the side repeater function is controlled by the BCM Via the door modules using the CCF Edit “Wing Mirror Indication”. MY15

A "warning lamp" is a red square on the trailing edge of the door, by the lock. A lot of Volkswagen stuff has them. I guess they just used that output.

Thanks for the tip, I don't think I would have figured that out on my own
