Just turn the kayak upside down and [in the main] put the rear end forward and strap down to the bars.
As an extra precaution, strap around the crossbrace bar also.
Gives a much lower and more ergonomic profile.
Oh and it doesn't fill up with water especially if you're in Scotland in the summer.

But if you carry two or more [like I did from Auchtermuchty last week], you then need 'uprights'.
And folding ones are best.  FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

Put my kayak on this afternoon for this evenings paddle.
You can see what I mean about the lower profile when it's strapped on upside down& front to back.
