Meridian Rear Seat Entertainment/Media Retrofit - COMPLETED

Mad Rear Media system activated in my CCF and active on the touchscreen,

There's a few functions not responding at the moment due to the Rear Seat Entertainment module not being on the MOST network, Screen Sync, System Softkey and a 2 other grey'd out softkeys which I'm unsure of their function as yet Laughing

I already have the Rear Seat Entertainment ECU and currently waiting on some more hardware in relation to the ECU. As far as the rest of the system hardware (headphones, remote) I already have.
The Meridian Rear Media System is pretty amazing being able to independently watch and or listen to multiple sources and the driver can have full control of whats happening or handover control to rear passengers who can use a remote control. Frankly I'm surprised I have the opportunity to fit this system due to the fact I never expected a pair of screens for this system to become available. The screens are a CAN based digital system with built in "whitefire" wireless transmission. To make it even more amazing they came in Ebony leather with the same stitching as my seats Thud
I jumped at the opportunity!

EDIT; Whitefire transmitter has to be added as it’s not part of screen. Covered later in thread.

So once stuff starts arriving I will update as I go. MY15

Where did the head rests come from Stu? I'm guessing L405/L494. My sprogs are still reward facing, but time is coming when RSE would be handy.

L538 but the screens/head restraint are same between L319, L538, L320 and I think L494 all around MY13/14/15/16.
L359 only had analogue screens so incompatible with the Meridian Gen 2.1 system in MY13 Freelander 2 onwards. MY15

Still waiting for parts, screens should be here on Monday which will be good as I need to sort out LVDS cables and its unclear the LVDS plug size on the back of the screen. In the meantime it's harvesting enough twisted pair CAN wiring, plugs and shielded wiring from my trusty donar harness. Be lost without it....

Main link harness between screens and RSE Module completed today all 3.2m of it comprising of twisted pair CAN circuits, switched power, ground and coding pin. Was a challenge finding long enough runs and enough pins as there is also a link harness at the screen ends. Still more to do but this is as much as can be done out of the car. Will add termination plugs when they arrive and add protective harness conduit with cloth TESA tape as per factory specification once in the car.

Next is to feed main link harness through the conduit I layed previously from RJB, under rear seats and to centre console. I'll also be chasing another conduit over the same route for 2 LVDS cables and 2 screened coax lines for the front touchscreen from the RSE & DVB-T modules. Grey house electrical conduit in pic above......waist not want not! As I don't have the LVDS cables as yet it's a simple task of pulling through the cables at a later date. Need to confirm LVDS plug on the rear of each screen before I can order the correct combinations of LVDS leads.

Once harness is in place will do a complete conductivity test to make sure all lines are good.

The man cave is in full wire harness production mode at the moment with pig tails and wire size classification in full swing Razz

Public holiday here today so I was able to complete the installation of the main harness from RSE module to front seats.

First task was to chase the RSE main harness through the existing conduit I layed previously for the power to the TIM module under drivers seat. This was rather easy and straight forward. I now have CAN, Power, Gnd & Coding Pin leads ready for each seat screen. Just need to add some convoluted conduit cover and TESA cloth tape to finish off and or course termination plug.

Second step was to pull through from the rear RJB the grey conduit which will be the cavity I will pull through the 2 LVDS & 2 CVBS coax cables for the touchscreen. Have left a heavy duty wire inside this grey conduit to pull through these cables when they are made/arrive. Black cable coming out from rear of centre console is the pull through wire.

So by the end of the day all wiring is in place. Soldered an extension to the CAN wires as my longest single run was too short and I was expecting this anyhow. Better joint than factory actual solder and 3 layers of shrink wrap rather than LR's glue and tape job...

And everything back to normal by the afternoon and ready for the next step.

Screens arrived today fit perfectly and leather is complete match. I was pretty confident they fitted but you can never be 100% sure until they're in your hands.
Now to pull them apart......this will be interesting Whistle

Lol, it's happening but now I'm being held up by another LR phark up as one of the RSE plugs has been incorrectly catelogued in the EPC so trying to sort this out currently...... Rolling Eyes MY15

Module stack complete, RSE module is bolted directly to the top mounting points of the DVB-t mount chassis. This will then be bolted to the Freelander 2 Satelite Radio module mount.

I've also completed all the wire exstensions of the headrest screens ready for the plugs to be put on once the wiring is thread through the mounting points in the seat. Only remaining rectification necessary is the LVDS lines which is going to be a challenge, especially as it's a shielded twisted pair of very small gauge wires. Tricky but not impossible and looking forward to the challenge. There is no option other than attempt rectification as the whole assembly is built in situ so the LVDS leads are terminated at the suppliers factory and hence new pre-terminated LVDS leads will not fit through headrest poles, even with plug shell removed.

Of course I had to strip one headrest/screen assembly to confirm all this which was an absolute pain mainly due to LR's instructions being absolutely incorrect. Evil or Very Mad

And to top that discovered that the supplier who builds these assemblies have miswired with CAN wires in wrong positions. Pos 7&8 CAN+ CAN- are incorrect. This was never discoverd as the headrest assembly harness plugs into a seat link harness and then into the main ICE harness as such it still works correctly but the wiring colour codes are reversed only between headrests screens and seat link harness. I'll add this to the growing phark ups we've discovered.... Rolling Eyes

On the point of growing LR phark ups, I'm still waiting on parts due to the main harness plug for the RSE module being incorrect in the EPC. To be fair we have now identified (thank you Dan at Duckworths) that Infact the plug part number is correct but JLR have got the wrong part in the bag so to speak. So as we speak some little munchkin JLR employee is going through their parts bin looking for the correct plug Rolling Eyes Being told 3 to 6 weeks for solution Thud Very efficient! Rolling Eyes

So waiting on parts now. MY15

Every company these days seems to take forever to deliver run of the mill parts & even longer for things that are slightly out of the ordinary. They don't get back to you either. One is dealing with imbeciles. Management has no idea what service is. Your delivery is probably delayed due to a dead horse!

Dakota Indians Tribal Wisdom
A Leadership Consideration
Tribal Wisdom

The tribal wisdom of the Dakota Indians of North America, passed on from generation to generation, says that when you discover you are riding a dead horse, the best strategy is to dismount.

However, in modern business, largely because of the heavy investment factors to be taken into consideration, often other strategies have been tried with dead horses, including the following:

• Buying a stronger whip.
• Changing riders.
• Threatening the horse with termination.
• Appointing a committee to study the horse.
• Lowering the standards and expectations so that dead horses can be included.
• Reclassifying the dead horse as “living impaired”.
• Hire outside contractors or suppliers to ride the dead horse.
• Providing additional funding to increase the horse’s performance.
• Do a case study to see if lighter riders would improve the horse’s productivity.
• Arranging to visit other sites to see how they ride dead horses - aka benchmarking.
• Harness several dead horses together for increased speed. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
