Launch Control (Electronic Handbrake)

O. M. G. Lordy Lordy!
I'm renaming this as the "Launch Control" device! (Electronic Handbrake)

Who would have imagined a 2 ton vehicle could accelerate from a standstill so quickly😱
No lag just "launch", amazing!
OMG I better try "Sport" mode - Holly Batman!!!!
I'm guessing the turbo has just enough time to spool before the handbrake releases and 420 Nm is available instantly Shocked
Thanks to Taztastic bringing this to my attention in one of his replies Thumbs Up MY15

OK,

So how do you do it, hold the handbrake switch up whilst pressing the throttle and pushing down to release?

You need to try the petrol version. To date I have only ever tried the car in standard auto and it takes off like a rocket if needed.

'While Land Rover’s official figure for the 0-100kmh sprint is a respectable 8.8 seconds, it feels quicker than that. We timed it for several runs using our stopwatch and it cracked the 100kmh mark in just 7.96 seconds. Consistently. Maximum torque comes in at just 1750rpm, making it almost diesel-like in its delivery.' (from The Motor Report review) Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

If you want to experience real Launch Control try it on a Porsche 911 with a pdk gearbox. I did it with an instructor, left foot on the brake. rev the engine to 7000 rpm and take your foot off the brake. You can get up to about 100mph and stop again in about 10 seconds. I did it once and felt physically sick and had to get out of the car in case I threw up. How the F1 guys cope with faster than this it I can't imagine. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Pull up to a stop.
Flick on the auto handbrake
Take foot off brake and on to accelerator.
Floor it!
Car leaps from standing start.

I've had a chance to think about why this has such a big affect on standing start acceleration.
I noticed when i took my foot off the brake once the Electronic Hand Brake is applied that the rear would "haunch" down.
For efficiency purposes the gearbox is uncoupled when at a stand still and this would appear to be linked to having your foot on the brake. With hand brake applied and foot off brake the gearbox selects a gear anticipating it's about to drive off.
This also means the turbo will begin to spool as increased load at idle would increase exhaust gases.
I'm also certain that due to the nature of the dual clutch auto gearbox that there is some electronic retardation, under normal operation to allow the gearbox to idle disengaged to engaging a gear on standstill and driving off.
That's my theory cause whoa, what a difference. MY15

Drive along gently at 20kmh and with your left foot gently touch the brake pedal, not enough to apply the brakes, you will feel the car slow and the engine die, applying the brakes, or more rightly the electronic signal received from the switch cuts the engine torque to allow 'better' braking.
When sat at the lights, as Stuart says, the gearbox is de coupled and the engine torque cut, lift off the pedal and floor it and there is a delay as all the other things have to happen first, with the EPB deployed the engine is 'torqued up' and held against the brakes, floor it and fly Thumbs Up
