Car has just died today. Put the key in, pressed start, system check then HDC, Gearbox and Engine error message with a picture of a book. All the lights came on, the water temp guage went to max and got an E when gear selection is displayed in the dash.

Breakdown man cam, tried to jump start it (it worked last time) but nothing. Managed to get it out of park (little yellow leaver hidden deep in the centre console) and took it to the dealer unable to get the key out.

Full marks to LR assist though. Breakdown man arrived in 45 mins. 30 mins later we were in the dealer and 15 mins after that a man from Hertz appeared with a decent (vectra estate) hire car. Top service. I'll let you know what was wrong, but any one else had similar problems? This is the second time this has happened now in the last four months, but last time a jump start cure everything (we put it down to the fault electrical heater recal), but car seems proper sick now!!  Freelander 2.2e HSE , Privacy, Fully debadged, 19" Chrome SHadow alloys

seems like a significant software problem, not mechanical.

Did breakdown recovery try disconnecting - then reconnecting the battery ?

Just a small advice: never insert the key and press start in a hurry. I've got the same problem several times too but mostly - if not always - after I've pressed the start button too fast.
Remember the Freelander 2 is a prestigious British Land Rover and should be handled with care and dignity.

I wasn't in a ruch to start and th ekey had been in the car for about 10 minutes before I pressed the start (mis-labled??) button. Tried the disconnect and reconnect of the battery trick. Result no alarm (strange) but every (and I mean every) outside light came on and stayed on. I don't think it's a good idea to leave the key inserted fot a very long time before starting the engine... (yes, indeed one more of those tricky advises...).

When disconnecting the battery, the poles, oops I ment the + and - cable, (see next post thanks nicam) should be hold together for 15 or 20 minutes before reconnecting.
Apparently this procedure resets the system.

Paul means that the wires connecting to the battery should be held together - NOT the poles of the battery. That would be a very bad idea. Don`t drive faster than your angel can fly!

Well, last year up in the mountains I experienced something similar. LR-man came, and jump-started the car. Then reprogrammed the key (which I understand is necessairy after a jump-start).
Next day I took the car to LR for check-up. They said it needed a software update.

Then the exact same thing happened a couple of months later, -up in the mountains. Same procedure.
Software update again. It has been running flawless since. I am curious to see if the same thing will happen again this winter up in the cold up in the mountains.

Keep us informed what the verdict is. Software update?  2008 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Automatic, Caspian Blue, Alpaca, Moon roof, Exclusive pack.

First time I was trying to get to Gent I ended up driving round Lille in France about 16 times - all the signs said 'Gand' and my map said 'Gent' - boy was I off when I found out it was one of the same so if you start spelling it Ghent everyone will get lost again - even my sat nav will get lost

Ca ris back from the dealer. Apparantly the crash (?) sensor went bonkers, so they reprogrammed it. At least there is another two years left on the guarantee. I got a new key at the same time as it had packed up a couple of months ago; ironically I went via the dealer on the way to work to order the new one before I cam back on the low loader! Freelander 2.2e HSE , Privacy, Fully debadged, 19" Chrome SHadow alloys

My LR2's had similar problems. Dealer eventually found a problem with the battery and replaced it under warranty.

Last time it happened they replaced the whole starter system and both keys.

The perils of owning on the early cars off the line - and the first in the Middle East!
