front tyres outside edge wear

Having seen the Original Contis wear very quickly on outside edge
on replacment I opted for Michelin these appear to be weraing also
so I went off for Hunter 4 wheel alignment today
result
it is as spot on as the day it was sold, their words we could only make it worse by touching anything.
I do not drive fast or corner fast
so it appears I am stuck with this issue on the vehicle.

does anyone else notice faster wear on the Front tyres?

It's a big heavy and high car, which is effectively front wheel drive, so wear on the outside edge is inevitable, paticulary on the left if you have a lot of roundabouts where you live.

But how fast is fast wearing?

Wear on the outside edge usually indicates excess toe in.

Totally agree, I now follow the brake in a straight line and dawdle round a bend like a Grampa and drive away style of driving.

Power steering wear. When parking, imagine you have no power steering and turn the wheel as you would with no power assistance. Many people turn the wheel when stationary, then move forward/backward which scrubs the tyres. Common on many cars these days. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
Evoque SD4 Dynamic Lux Auto
Present: Audi A3 S Line.

On my first FL2 I fitted General Grabber AT tyres, the two front tyres suffered from outside edge wear. After 20000 miles I got the garage to swap them onto the rear of the car when it was serviced. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

I have just the nearside front with a noticeably scrubbed outside edge. Apart from that, my tyre wear is pretty even across all four. I am about to have new Conti Cross Contact UHP fitted all round (as soon as I can find a sensible price*) and I'll have the front alignment checked at the same time.

*best price thus far is £150.xx fitted per corner but that is at F1 Autocentres where they offer extra super duper precision balancing to manufacturer spec for just an extra £3 per wheel on top of the standard balancing cost included in the fitting. Done on the same machine as a standard balance too. Yeah, right. It's a road car... not an F1 car that just might need a little more precision.

Not sure I can be doing with the tyre fitter calling his mate over for a bit of mutual teeth sucking before advising that I need new brakes, exhaust, shocks etc either.

I had this same problem on a Volvo 240 estate, the answer was power steering wear, being a disbelieving sort of person I looked for a solution. Using a bit of trigonometry I decided a slight change of camber would sort it, the 240 had an adjustment on the top of the McPherson strut mounting giving up to 5mm sideways movement, I reckoned that another 2mm of negative camber would work so unbolted gave he struts a couple of calculated kicks and tightened up, that cured the problem. I will look at my FL2 and see if there is movement or if I can space out the bottom wishbone. I have lost 50% of the outer tread block in 8k miles, for some reason it is worse out here than the UK. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis
2012 HSE SD4 In Orkney Grey now gone, best car ever.

You will find all Freelanderā€™s wear more on the front near side outer edge, I also had mine tracked & it was spot on, best advice I can give you is change the front with the back every 6000 miles

Mine also does this, ( wear on front l/h ) but more noticeable on the 19ā€™s with Conti UHPs. The 17ā€¯ with Avon Ice seem pretty Even.

Speed bumps / humps will also do damage to tyre edges so I play the left and right game and not always hit them dead centre. Idea

Yes rotate but always on same side with directional tyres. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Surprised no one has mentioned tyre pressures.

I totally agree with both these comments, although I have noticed that the original fit Conti Tyres seem to be more prone to edge wear.

PS I am Grampa. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 77k+ miles) (MY2015)
