Intercoolers do die, I have killed two, OK one was impaled with a sheet of ice wading when I should have known better - you can run for weeks if you can put up with the reduced performance.
Yes it's a front end off job, not difficult with common tools, and easy to do on your own.
The oil leaking out is the oil that has passed the turbo (common enough) and settling in the low point that is the intercooler.
It is very common for the short intercooler hose just before the intake valve to fail, the one directly connected to the intercooler can also fail.
If the condenser is the one for the aircon (can't think of another) then the fluid will gradually leak out, at some point the system will notice that there is low pressure and disconnect the aircon compressor - so no harm done, just no air conditioning, in April, in the UK, you are not going to miss it.
