Just bought a 2010 FL2 HSE for with 235/55/R19 tyres...

... and need help deciding what to replace them with.

The vehicle (picture attached) is for export to Kenya, and given our roads here, I would want the most robust tyre possible.

I have researched and found that a 255/55R19 can also go on this car - can someone please share any experiences of doing so?

Would you put the 235/55 or the 255/55 on your FL2?

In the 235/55R19 range, I have found:

&
http://www.mytyres.co.uk/cgi-bin/rshop.pl?...p=R-153813

and in the 255/55R19 range I have found:
http://www.mytyres.co.uk/cgi-bin/rshop.pl?...p=R-291603
&
http://www.mytyres.co.uk/cgi-bin/rshop.pl?...p=R-149030

Also, any thoughts on these General Grabber ATRs at 235/55 R 19

Thanks in advance!

personally I would be looking at more robust tyres as the 55 profile is pretty low for the roads over there but you may also have limited suitable tyre choice with 19'' wheels

if you have time and money I would get a spare set of 18'' or possibly 17'' wheels and fitting them with AT tyres with at least a 65 profile (235/65/18 for example)

this would give a wider choice of tyres and the deeper side wall would allow for a smoother ride over rougher roads whilst protecting the wheel rim itself.

I am planning to get the car exported in a week / 10 days. I will mainly use it in Nairobi, but will occasionally take it out to the parks on the weekends.

I am open to selling / exchanging the alloys - do you think there would be a market out there for 19" rims / tyres?

Thanks for your input - i is very much appreciated!

I agree with RogB. The 19"s look good but are really more suited to use on decent smooth roads. (I have a set of 19" Triple Sports fitted at present). However, for your planned use I would expect 17" to be more suitable. You need the deeper side walls to cope with all terrain use. There is certainly a market for good 19's here, but you are time limited which restricts your choices.

My son has been working in Kenya since January and has a Toyota Hilux pickup. He has had a few punctures already and has just swapped all of his tyres for the ones below. What really prompted the change was seeing some leopards/cheetas by the side of the road and a few minutes later having a puncture. Evidently changing a tyre on your own whilst keeping an eye open for wild animals concentrates the mind. Shocked

Thanks - these are awesome tyres, but they don't make them in 235/65 R17 Sad

Dubba . I don't know where you are in UK at present, but re your 17" v 19" quest, have you considered speaking to AJS Tyres, a forum sponsor in Surrey. They are 4x4 specialists and often have tyre and wheel deals. They may be able to supply you with 17"s with suitable tyres and take in your 19's at a reasonable price. Just a thought...

Thanks dunkley - what a great idea!

I will reach out to them on Monday. The car is still in Leeds, and won't ship for at least a few weeks.

Thanks Bob.

I will reach out to AJS via email to see if there is something that they can do!

I have also seen these on eBay and they look interesting as 17": http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Land-Rover-Freel...SwTM5YzZlM

I once had to change a Disco 3 All Terrain tyre on the road down to Shimoni , so given that I doubt things have improved Laughing I'd say that tyre was a lot more suitable than a 55 profile and it was trashed so leave the 19" for the drug dealers and pimps Rolling with laughter you should be able to get a decent set of 17" over here before the car is shipped . People swear by Grabbers and so many of them they can't be wrong. Personally I us 17" Pirelli Scorpion AT , drive nicely in town , good enough for dirt tracks , and have a nice big rim protection bead. 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

Thanks MartynB,

That doesn't sound like fun... and the roads are just as bad (if not worse in some places)!

Given everyone's feedback and experiences, I am definitely swapping the 19" for 17" in rims and going for All Terran tyres.

The General Grabbers seem to be the way to go, but I will consider the Pirelli's as well.

Thanks for the inputs everyone!

Bought the 17" alloys / rims... which tyre?

So I've bought a set of 17" rims off eBay (for £175 + shipping; basic picture attached for reference).

I am debating between these three tyres (Size: 235/65R17), and would welcome input, noting that:

The roads here have a lot of potholes
I am looking for something to use on tarmac M-F, and go offload (trails & mud, mainly)
Only Pirelli has an official presence here, in terms of replacements down the line

The three options are:

Any and all feedback would be very welcome so that I can get these ordered and installed.

Thanks!

We have not been stuck on the Pirellis for 6 years of ownership we live on an unmade Lane, I use the car off-road for fishing, and for snow - because it's the old car Laughing They are very civilised on road, when my Suby needs a set of tyres they will be Pirelli. Our bin collection was today, and the council use dedicated LR Defender 130 or Modified Toyota Hilux 4x4 mini refuse trucks for the unmade roads , farm tracks etc, They use General Grabber AT which is a vote for their ruggedness. 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership
