Jim,

Thanks for sharing your experience, I am a bit surprised that you didn't notice the coolant leaking out and that you actually got oil out of the overflow bottle (I would have expected the typical chocolate milkshake that you see when the head gasket fails for example)


In my case I replaced my coolant at about 9 year and 100,000.

I will post here if my heat exchange fails

Paul,

There was plenty of coolant still in the system sitting under the oil, so the coolant hadn't really leaked out before the oil started being pushed through the pressure release valve in the expansion tank. Though I must admit that I hadn't checked the coolant for a long time and have assumed that during the service 12 weeks ago they may have had a cursory look...

Anyway I have managed to replace the filter housing and cooler. I came to the conclusion that I would have to remove the Air Con compressor and later found online an Land Rover workshop manual which confirmed that. With the old bit out, you can see in the photograph some of the remains of the oil running from the coolant hose:



The Air Con Compressor and Condenser can be moved, carefully, without having to evacuate the system. I didn't have to remove the Throttle Body, although it is slightly easier to access the hoses on the top of the oil cooler with it removed. I later took it out anyway as I wanted to look at the condition of it (it was replaced 4 years ago).

The coolant system has had a flush but there's still a fair amount of oil in there, so a couple more flushes in due course will be required.
