What Hand Winch To Get For Off Roading?

Hi I am looking for a suitable hand winch, just incase I ever get stuck off road.

Devon 4x4 only do the one hand winch, which I was thinking of getting. This is the ARB Magnum Hand Winch.

I already have Maxtrax recovery boards, which got me unstuck on wet grass when I still had the road tyres on that the Freelander came with. Upgraded to General Grabber AT's as soon as I could after that.

But the Maxtrax were useless when my Sister got the Freelander bogged in less than 5 mins after having her first go off road.

So now looking for a suitable hand winch, before I go anywhere off road again.

Tirfor are the best known supplier of hand winches, in this country at least. They do a wide range with differing capacities. I can't comment on how they compare with the ARB, as I haven't used either.

It's not obvious that a winch would have helped in the above situation, though, as there doesn't appear to be anything solid close enough to attach it to. (Unless, of course, you had another vehicle handy to hook it on to.)

Tirfor I would suggest, you may need to consider also getting a ground anchor and a tree strop.

Various sizes available, up to 3000kg pull, I have a 1300kg model, with a 50m rope and a pulley to double up the pull, due to the lower rating.

I would take advise from others for other alternative's

I have a old Tirfor sitting in the shed, haven't used it in ages. might need some shear pins for it, and in going through Glasgow on Saturday. Common sense isn't very common.

Tirfor! As big as you can work the lever on. Everyone can spread it - Anyone can catch it. Stay home - the life you save can be your own!

I can't seem to find where to buy Tirfor Hand Winches online???

I have found lots of other makes online but not Tirfor???

According to this guy, a mid size hand winch would do me: http://www.landroverweb.com/landrover/off-...ope-hoist/

Also once I finally get a winch, I would like to get some sort of training with it. So I know what I am doing if I ever need to use it.

Also looking to get a ground anchor, as there is unlikely to be a convenient tree near by.

How much do you want for it, and were would I be able to buy accessories for it?

I have to work on Saturday but should hopefully be finished after 3pm.

Ive used Tirfor hand winches with ground anchors in the forces, pulling out Land Rovers loaded to max and 12 ton Bedford and Daf 4X4 Trucks.

Brilliant bit of kit, very simple but I would say that no matter make of winch you go for then get some proper training/advice on setting up and safety.... If they go wrong when pulling then boy do they go wrong !!
