Waiting time for back surgery

I couldn't see anything definitive on Google search so some opinions please. My dad is suffering terminal cancer as many of you know and there are some "spots" on his liver now but not a full spread yet. His back has got much worse and he is in agony sometimes and is dosed up on a cocktail of strong painkillers.

The tumor has basically pushed the disc out of the way and is causing bone to rub on bone and nerve pain with it hence the horrendous pain. Radiotherapy is not enough alone to fend off the tumor but they do not want to do chemotherapy again until his pain is under control.

The MRI result has been passed to a back specialist with the possibility of doing surgery to inject cement into where the disc should be to put an end to the problem. It is the procedure they use for osteoporosis sufferers and is minimally invasive. As yet, we do not even have an appointment booked with said specialist so that would need to happen before they schedule any surgery.

We want the surgery to take place soon if he can have it done but we are wondering what to expect in terms of waiting times. A month perhaps? Or is that too optimistic? Confused

I imagine that the waiting times vary depending on multiple factors, but I would hope that they would take the individual circumstances into consideration.

Thanks Iain. I guess it will vary from one hospital to another to some degree. I just wondered if anyone on here may know someone who has been through that kind of surgery and what their experiences were.

I've watched a video on the procedure and its just mind blowing what they can do these days. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby
