No help but, I've crossed the USA Rockies twice by train . Spectacular. Long slow trip though.

We did a fly drive from Calgary to Vancouver (via, kananaskis, lake louise, Jasper, Vancouver island etc etc), At the same time our neighbours did pretty much the same trip but going on the Rockymountaineer train. We met in a pub in Victoria on vancouver island, we did not know they were going, and they did not know we were either, bit of a shock being in the same pub at the same time thousands of miles from home when we live 100 yards apart. Anyhow, we were chatting about the trip and whilst the train bit was good it was extremely expensive. The price they paid for the two of them was more than we did for four of us (2 adults 2 teenagers) using 4 & 5 star hotels. FL2 Metropolis, Loire Blue, ebony/ivory |

Only done a long train trip down under. First leg Sydney to Adelaide in a sleeper then second leg to Alice Springs sitting. The sitting was far cheaper but utterly exhausting. A sleeper costs the earth. We did not see much as a lot of it was overnight, each night. Return was by plane!

Back in 2012 we were going to travel on the rocky. But very expensive, so we decided to do a drive round pre booking hotels before we left.
