Snow chains/socks in the Alps question

Im driving down to the Alps in the Freelander for the first time snowboarding at Easter and apparently legally have to have snow chains available. Am i ok to take snow socks instead? They're much cheaper than chains and i'm unlikely to need either at that time of year.

The thing with snow socks is that they can easily get shredded/damaged rendering them useless. MY13 HSE LUX Aintree Green
