Home > Technical > Auto box noise in 2nd gear |

My Sept 09 MY10 HSE is @70,000 miles. It has recently started making an intermittent but noticeable metallic scraping noise when accelerating through 2nd gear. This is not connected to the common 'whoosh' sounds as the gears change. I cannot reproduce the noise when in Command Shift or Sport mode. Gear changes seem normal, no slippage, no warnings or failure messages. But this is definitely a 'new' noise! Any ideas?

Update on the above. The noise is still there, noticeable in 3rd gear too. Sounds like squeal from the "bands" of an old style GM box if you are familiar with those. Spoke yesterday to Adam at Duckworths. Based on my description, he suspects it may be the transfer box/bevel drive, failure of the splined shaft linked to the auto box. We will find out, now booked in next Thursday for investigation. NB. My original transfer box was replaced under warranty @ 24K. Mileage now at 74K. Glad I have an LR extended warranty!

Terry, your timing is impeccable! I say this as I think I may have fixed it. Firstly, I took it to Duckworths, tried to demo it on a test drive, but failed. Left it with them for a day, but they could not fault it. I suggested maybe an oil change may help, which they agreed may work. It was recommended I keep a sample of the oil removed. Only this week, I went through the oil change procedure, roughly 3 litres at a time, three times. The gearchange is now smoother (it was not noticeably bad before) and also quiet. Occasionally there is a slight "sigh" on the change from 2nd to 3rd, but no squeal at all as previous. I have only done a few miles so far. Only time will tell. I will do a write up on the oil change procedure this weekend, as most of the best info I found elsewhere, on various Volvo sites & Youtube.

The auto box is not the same as an Allroad AFAIK. There is not even a dipstick! The Aisin box holds 7 litres. But a drain and refill changes only about 3 litres. I did it 3 times using 9 litres. There is a direct flush method but special kit is required to do that. Agreed the oil change is far from straightforward. Bit of a faff TBH. Luckily I have access to a 4 poster lift. Most important is to ensure complete cleanliness so as to not introduce foreign objects into the oil. 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)
