Clunking/knocking from rear

Hi,

I have a slight knocking/clunking from the LH rear suspension when driving over speed bumps/uneven roads. Firstly I suspected the drop links to be worn as the knocking is a typical symptom for that. I was under the car a few days ago, but could not find any play in them. So, I am suspecting it can be the shock absorber or its upper bush. Is there any easy way to diagnose this or is this a typical failure for our cars?
I will take a closer look at this when I do the rear wheel bearing in one of the upcoming weeks.

Thanks for any advice.

Not wanting to be the doom sayer......... but........

ive got a 2012 Evoque Pure, same underneath as the FL2.

I had what started as a droning sound under braking, then became a drone from the rear (I suspected it may the rear diff going) and then became a knocking sound from the rear left wheel.

Land Rover assist thought it may be the CV joint gone on that wheel, and so the car got taken into Land Rover dealer for fixing under warranty.

Turned out the transfer box at the front had suffered an oil leak, had the seals previously replaced but had still failed which had taken down the gearbox.

So a knocking from the rear left wheel was actually a faulty transfer box and failing gearbox...... still waiting to see what the warranty company are paying (thank god for buying an approved used vehicle !!)

Thanks for the tip, but I am 99% sure that this knocking is suspension related Smile

I thought mine was too when it started knocking.... might be worth checking the transfer box and transmission if there is nothing obvious on the suspension

good luck with sorting it Thumbs Up

We have an intermittent " clunk" on the rear nearside shocker. Had it looked at when it was in for MOT , no problems with function , and/or external mounting. It passed the MOT. The Indy garage was not concerned and told us they had seen it before. Replacement will be done next year when it gets serviced but at the moment its just an inconvenience . 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

Have you checked the rubber that sits on a stem on the shock absorber, these should be fixed solid and not move. I have read of a few cases where the rubber had become loose and would move on it's stem causing a knocking noise when going over bumps. Fix was to use something similar to tiger glue to fix it back in place.

(see item circled in red)

Hi all,

That rubber thing on the bottom of the shocker seems to be fine on mine. After having a trip up in the mountains on bumpy roads this weekend, I have confirmed that my LH rear shocker is shot. This one is probably the cause for my knocking, so I have now ordered 2x Delphi rear shockers from Island 4x4. I was tempted on the Britpart units, but was advised to go for a better alternative.

Same as you my lh rear nocks and doing research it seems to be a common thing that the rubber isolator either fails or slips and makes this nocking sound. I have all the replacment parts just never got around to doing it Freelander 57 plate XS Blue Auto

Good way to check it's transfer box is to remove the fuse of the haldex, you will run in front wheel drive only and relieve all the load down the prop/rear diff. If clonk goes away you know it's drivetrain related. www.bellengineering.co.uk

MMRover75, please update the thread when you fit the new shockers. I think I am experiencing the same with mine. 2010MY 2.2 e4 (gone but, not forgotten)

Hi,

I will! Hopefully, I will have them replaced together with the rear wheel bearing sometimes next week. Just waiting for Fedex and a time slot between all the family activities...
