So, my Freelander TD4 started overcooling (MY08).
When I drive in the city (lots of idling on traffic lights and going slowly) the dash temperature indicator doesn't reach the middle position. When I give it more revs and power (e.g. going uphill etc) I can see the temperature indicator moving up to the middle position, where it stops - doesn't go beyond that point. But when I slow down, the temperature drops again.

Recently I had an issue where oil in coolant reservoir was found. The cooling system has been flushed since then, and seems to be ok so far..
According to the Haynes manual, overcooling is caused by faulty "thermostat", or faulty "Engine coolant temperature sensor".
I don't know how exactly the temperature is measured, but if the coolant temperature sensor is in contact with the coolant liquid, is it possible that it got covered partially in oil (sludge, that was present in the cooling system previously) and now it is not measuring the temperature adequately?

I think that it is not that difficult to test the thermostat, it is all described in detail in the manual, but wanted to check if anyone has any experience with overcooling.

had this on the wife's vw polo l. found the water pump impeller loose had to change the pump. just a thought.

Thanks for the ideas. I might take the thermostat off and test it first before I order new one.

just change it, job done no messing about with electric kettle,one possibility out the way,car back on road fairly quick.

Just had a run with our car last week while connected to a computer. Engine coolant was running at around 70 degrees C.

My one big issue with this car is fuel consumption and my research points to a cold(er?) running engine uses more fuel.

How is/was your consumption? Mine is aroind 12L/100km in town and maybe 10L/100km open road.

The computer on my dash says that my average consumption in the city is around 10litres/100 km, when I drive on highway, it goes down to some 7.3 litres (I have diesel engine)
I think that If your consumption is higher, it could be just clogged fuel filter, easy to replace (but others more experienced will tell you more)

Over the decades I have had 4 thermostats fail. 3 over heating, 1 cooling. Unless the Freelander thermostat is machined out of a solid block of unobtainium they are cheap enough to replace! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

But in Australia don't the dials read the other way up anyway? ie cold at the top and warm at the bottom? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I had the same issue with my ´09 td4. Thermostat was stuck open, changed it and problem solved.

Hello, is it easy job to do? Changing thermostat, 4 bolts few hoses and sensor cable.
readed topix that you need to take air filter away to get acces.

Noticed after cam belt change + water pump that temp won't reach halfway and it sails between half and 1/4 of it.
Seems also that Fuel based heater is also running all the time to reach normal temp.

Would there be some air in system? if so maybe opening reservoil of coolant cap and running engine get the air away.

Or is it possible that oil cooler is messing up instead of thermostat?

i would like to hear some advices before taking actions to order new thermostat and changing it by my self

Quick google results ( http://gparts.lv/autoparts/search/62936037/SWAG/ ) there is many other brands that uses same looking thermostat, is there some differences than just price if i order " land rover " boxed one "
