HST TD4 Auto - Some Questions

Well having considered an S, then considered a GS, i'm now looking at a used (6 month old!) HST, and an auto at that!!

So can some of you clever folks tell me:

What is the cold climate pack?? (Can't find any info on Landy website)

Real life fuel economy with the auto??? ( I can normally better combined figures)

How does the auto tow???? (Sure the CC tested an auto but can't track it down yet!)

Thanks in advance! Cool

CC tested an HSE auto in the September Club mag which is available online as a pdf if you log on to member services and go to this page and download it

Just put 400 miles on my HSE auto with about 60 towing a 1200kg caravan, the rest mixed driving and just worked it out at 29.7mpg but engine has only done 8k miles so expect it to improve a little.

Tows better than my 3.2 DiD Shogun Auto did Laughing

United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Sumatra Black

From memory, "Climate pack" = HID front lights, Heated front screen, heated wingmirrors, heated seats

When I was sizing up the options I wanted, I knew I wanted HIDs & heated front screen.....but I paid the extra £50 for the climate pack with for the heated seats/mirrors

EDIT
Sorry, I might be getting "Climate pack", & "Winter pack" confused.... '57 FL2 GS
Sumatra Blk, Tints, Winterpack, Dodgylooking TowBar, roof rails, Front & Rear LED Indicators, Clear Side repeaters(Led), LED Rear Position/Brake lights, Additional Power-point in the boot & Brighter luggage Illumination fitted

MPG with auto HSE on long runs averages 32 and about town nearer 30. Have had as much as 36 mpg but that was driving at 65 on the motorway and was too boring.MPG when towing my 1600kg caravan with roof box and bikes etc was as bad as 17 with a strong head wind and up to 25 when not pushing it.

The FL2 is the best towcar i have had and always feels stable and willing to go, much better than the XC90 that i had before and better than the D3 i have used as well.

United Kingdom 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Tonga Green

On a longish journey I can can get up to 35mpg using cruise, sometimes higher.

I find mpg is most affected by head/tail winds when motorway driving. And that cruise at 75mph is often better than at 70mph for economy as the engine is at a more efficient rpm. And 75mph is not so fast that drag takes over. Freelander 2 TD4 HSE auto Tonga Green/Alpaca

Germany 2010 Freelander 2 TD4_e HSE Manual Alaska White

I tow a 1900kg double axle hobby caravan. Having moved from a Mercedes ML 320 CDI to the FL I was a little apprehensive. The first trip was done with only about 700 miles on the clock and I thought we had made the wrong choice. Next time out was a 500km trip to Bavaria and it was much better, and the return trip was better still.

Basically, it will tow at 60 mph in cruise control all day. It goes up and down every hill (including the Austrian/Slovenia motorways (upto 1:10 hills!) and will only drop off a couple of mph (but it will be in 4th, maybe 3rd). The only problem i find is that if one is baulked on a hill then it can take a while to get going. That said I am towing at near its limit so is quite an extreme test. Any 1300 to 1500 kg van would be shrugged off. It is a always very stable (although occasionally upset when approaching and overtaking a loaded car transporter on the m'way), the standard mirrors are excellant (naturally I have towing ones as well). I always tow in "manual" as it can hang on to gears too long when in Auto

In terms of mpg, towing to Croatia this summer at 60 mph, we got 21 mpg (compare to: solo 26mpg in town, A roads 32mpg and M way at 80 to 90 mph about 29mpg). It was also hot (34 to 37 deg) and the temperature guage on the car didn't move a mm. It used about 100ml of oil for the whole trip there and back and no coolant, and kept us coold at 20 deg the whole way.

With the price of used luxury cars falling I would take advantage and get the HSE and definitely the aout as well.

My GS auto averages 34mpg on runs and 32 at other times although that's mostly using the command shift to shift manually at lower revs than the auto does it for you...

Good luck deciding and hope you are going for black!

My HSE Auto averages about 32mpg per month. Motorway journeys usually return 34-35mpg whilst city driving around the 25mpg mark. LR quote 33mpg on the combined cycle so thats pretty consistent! Now - 2017 BMW X3 M Sport Carbon Black
Gone - 2014 BMW X3 M Sport Space Grey, faultless!
Gone - 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Bali Blue with xenons

Thanks. I will have the September issue somewhere so will dig it out.

Thanks to everyone else too. I'm towing just under 1200Kg, it is a very stable 'van anyway (has AKS stabiliser, Alko shocks and Alko ATC fitted so should not move!) so the Freelander should have no worries.

The HST seems to be a bargain, I love the body kit. I'm hoping to keep it for a while so a wee bit extra money is neither here nor there.

Now just need to test drive one and see if I actually like it!!!!!!!!!

One small problem to consider. The amount of rear bumper that has to be cut away especially if you have the q/r tow bar. There is an extra bracket for the electrics to be fitted to the hst rear bumper.

I would probably go for an ex-demo HSE auto. Thumbs Up

Ok something to think about then ... though we would be having a fixed bracket. Will ask.
