KEYFOB DESKCHARGER

I have a problem. I leave my Freelander to hybernate, as I only use my Discovery 3 in the winter. I discovered that the keyfob wont open the doors anymor, after six weeks of disuse. They seem the be charged by induction in the car. Now I wonder : does anybody know of a desktop charger for these fobs, as I do not use the FL until april, and I do not intend to run the car every month for an hour or so to charge both fobs... Confused

Maybe there is a broader interests for such a device [ dealers ; how do they charge keyfobs from FL's on their driveway..],
and someone coul put it on the market ? [ Freelander 2 TD4e MY10 Sport manual. SVR badge engineered ] SOLD

You could try a mobile phone induction charger... Induction Charger Pad

Not a huge cost and it would (probably) work with your phone as well.

@HappyNomad. Thanks for the idea. But how do I know it doesn't "fry" the key, as I do not know what LR uses as a charging current or voltage... [ Freelander 2 TD4e MY10 Sport manual. SVR badge engineered ] SOLD

I don't know but I suspect that if it worked at all, the key would only draw what it needs. My keys are of the replaceable battery type otherwise I'd probably try it. It really is an own risk type thing though.

I use an iPad charger on my Kindle on the basis of the kindle only drawing what it needs with no ill effects. I believe the iPad charger is rated higher than the iPhone charger (both work fine with either device) and both are rated higher than the OEM Kindle charger as far as I know.

Hopefully somebody more electronically aware will be along soon Very Happy

Update... it appears that a modern QI induction charger will not work on key fobs.

Seems a few BMW drivers and a D3 driver have had the same problem and have had good results with an induction charger base from an electric toothbrush.

Probably a much less 'intelligent' device than a QI pad. Google key fob on electric toothbrush charger or similar.

You look at the issue from the wrong angle.
After that period of time, the car enters deep sleep and it WONT open with the remote. ONLY with the mechanical key.
After that you need to insert the key into the slot for authorization and to stop the alarm.

Just for the record. I used to charge up an electronic device which used an induction charging loop by using a tape deck head demagnetiser (if you are old enough to know what one of those is!). It would be interesting to know if it would work with a key fob since all you would need would be to put it on top of a leaky mains transformer. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I found a youtube issue on BMW keyfobs. They used an old toothbrush charger. And : it works !
Just overnight charging kicked it back into life. Best thing : charger was left after decease of
toothbrush some time ago... Rolling with laughter

@ Alex_pescaru. After opening and closing the car with the mechanical key, and activating the start button to
open an window, no change. The car had woken up and no remote key functioned yet. Sorry... [ Freelander 2 TD4e MY10 Sport manual. SVR badge engineered ] SOLD

Good result.

Alex's thinking is probably where we should have started though.
