Smart keys

My new to me Freelander has a smart key, the type that you don't dock to start the car. I've been searching for an answer but to no avail, when I start the car, if I get out and walk away from the car will the engine stop? I tried it today on my drive and as I walked around the drive the engine still ran. I was just wondering from a security point of view if the engine should stop when the key is out side of the car? Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

No, engine will remain runing but a warning message will be displayed in the driver configure screen of smartkey not being detected.
If engine is switched off it will not restart until smartkey is re-detected. MY15

Interesting, I always thought that it was illegal to leave an engine running with no one in the car. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

It is in most countries but just think if the battery of the key
Is empty and you are driving on the highway.

I never thought of that really, I was thinking more along the lines of a car jacking really, i.e. Someone forces you out of your car, let them drive off and you still have the key, just wondered if the car would stop with no key. Likewise, only time I leave my car running is when I'm defrosting mine and my wife's car at the same time on a cold morning. I can leave my car warming up with the key in my pocket while scraping the ice of the wife's car. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

It happened to a relative visiting Oman who was taken shopping by the lady of the house in a Mercedes S class. They were dropped off in town by the chauffeur (!) and a few minutes later received a call saying that the car had stopped on a dual carriageway and did she have the key? Sure enough it was in her handbag. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Probably is on the highway, what I do in my drive has nothing at all to do with plod/DVLA. You can lock it as well with the engine running I seem to remember so no issues with the milkman taking off in it unless you are keen to get rid of the wife. Whistle

Once heard the milkman say he had slept with every woman in the street bar one. Took it up with the wife and she said it was probably the snooty cow at number 37

Mine won't lock with the engine running, it just bleeps at me.
Mercedes used to have a proximity built into the key, it wasn't very far though, 100 yards or so and the engine would cut.
