My Freelander 2 2008, HSE failed to start.


I am getting steering locked message.....I have researched and realize its a common fault.
In my case, I noticed the car is on fall lock, and besides the STEERING LOCKED message I also get a diagram showing the position of the front wheels like this... /-----/

My thinking is that the wheels being on lock is somehow putting pressure on the steering lock pin.

I want to get the steering off fall lock, will I do any damage manually turning the steering, its extremely heavy.

I see the manual say wriggle the steering, I tried that.

I am about to go back and try and start the car by removing battery lead, but I feel the wheels need moving.

I think you are correct in thinking that the steering being on full lock is preventing the steering lock from disengaging. I would try wiggling the wheel to the right(if that is the way the wheels are turned) at the same time as inserting the key into the slot.You may have to do this a few times in order to release the steering lock. Before you try this do a hard reset by removing both battery leads and holding them together for a minute or so then reconnect and wiggle the wheel as you insert the key and see if that works.

I’ve had this I got all sorts of daft messages,try the hard reset like you said it didn’t work for me but taking the plastic shroud off the steering column and giving the steering lock a good bash or three and moving the wheel got it going.

Well been to the car today, tried the battery reset, jiggling and swearing, managed to straighten the steering to dead center and the little diagram agreed... |---|


But the steering stayed locked.


Going to try the Irish screwdriver on it next.

Any tips on removing the steering plastic cowling, don't want to break any clips , and where is the lock mechanism located on the steering column,

is it possible to remove the whole column? thinking of eBay parts, don't have much confidence in local indy.
