M.O.T time. - What a shocker!

Just been to main dealer for M.O.T and major service.I expected a bill for around £500, but ended paying an extra £2000!
Several oil leaks were found, including: rear diff seal, crankshaft rear oil seal, sump gasket leak, and rear off-side shock absorber leak.Anyway, all is sorted now. The joys of motoring!

I'm glad that all is done, because,if I didn't the bill might have been a lot more. It's just a shame that I've had to fork out so much at once, especially as I was going to trade the car in later next year, around the time I was planning to take early retirement.

Crankshaft rear oil seal would have required gearbox out. How did they spot that without removing gearbox, or was the clutch slipping? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Did all of those problems develop since the last service /mot?

Was there much oil on your garage floor? I wouldn't have thought that a rear diff seal leak or sump leak would be an MOT failure unless really bad. All cars have some oil leaks. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Don't forget that it's actually a Ford underneath. What you were told sounds like an excuse. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

It is quite easy to see if the crank shaft oil seal is leaking.

But to be fair as already mentioned by Dorsetfreelander, this would have been the bulk of the cost. Its a massive job.

Personally if it was me, while this was being done, I would have changed the clutch and flywheel (if manual) as this is not expensive to so if the box is already out. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Main dealer sent me an email with a video attached. The video showed all the problems underneath the vehicle. I have no reason to believe that they were trying it on.Barring the huge bill, I feel more confident driving my HSE.Prevention is better than cure!

I'd recommend Stonelake at Copley as an independant if you need any work in the future, the people running it used to work in and own a LR Main Dealership. Their premises are immaculate , both reception / showroom, and workshops. And I'm sure that more than a few people seeking the main dealer Rybrook Copley ( which is bang next door ) end up in Stonelake

They have courtesy cars so the 30 minute drive from Bingley would not be an issue 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

Thanks very much for the info.I will give them a go.
I haven't had much look with two independents not far from me.I used one last year for the MOT and service, but wasn't very happy with the service.
The second one had some good reviews on Facebook, but wasn't very helpful when I tried to book the MOT.
