agm batteries

agm batteries are designed to work stop starts and power all electrics without the engine running,this part is clear,they can also stand a high discharge,and recover perfectly,but could I replace a agm with a flooded if the intention was not to use the stop start,i know that the flooded will fail if discharged on a regular basis using the stop start,and powering all the electrics.its just that ive got a battery on a scrap car that's not very old that I could use.800amp 85 amp hour

The petrol engine needs 238 amp to start (2 year old battery when tested) then gradually increases charging settling at 80 amps after about 20 seconds, maybe the diesel needs a bit more to start it, lets guess 285 amps due to larger engine & higher compression. If you are not using the start stop I personally think a standard battery will be ok. I have never had a flat battery but I do replace them every 4 years whether they need it or not, peace of mind, & amortised over 4 years it is not much money anyway. Not worth getting stuck beyond the black stump with no mobile phone coverage which is typical down under! I also carry 2 x 18 ah jump starting kit with anderson connectors additional to 300 amp continuous jumper leads with 2mm solid copper clamps (not the crap 2000 amp Bull Sh-t they sell in auto shops).

In short, no. The charging parameters are different. If you change the type of battery you will need to have the car set up for it by a dealer. There have ben posts about this in the past. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

the answer is that the freelanders charging system on the stopstart models,only charges part time when necessary, which allows the battery to get low on reserve amperage,a normal flooded battery will only stand this for a short time and then fail, so even if you don't use the stop start its got to be a agm battery.this info from my tech friend who is a trainer for a top motoring company.

I have a gut feel that it may also be happening on the petrol engine, there are a stack of hills in my area & I have noticed the car seems to brake coasting down hill, not every time, but it does happen, I feel it is the alternator adding a bit of braking. The air conditioning does it to some degree as well, but with a bigger engine, braking from the AC it is not so noticeable.

On my previous car with only a 1.4L 44kw engine the AC was brilliant as a down hill brake. Also, I always turned it off briefly taking off at the lights, it was a real anchor, but it was a brilliant AC, it could freeze the nuts off a brass monkey & I used it year round. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
