The kit that came with my car has a relay and 2 fuses in the box |

Think it was the later models that used a relay in the genuine LR towing kit. (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.

Are all Australian fitted towbars the same as the American type receiver hitch?

I don't know if they are all receiver type, it's certainly very common. My own towbar is a 2 inch receiver.
