The kit that came with my car has a relay and 2 fuses in the box

Think it was the later models that used a relay in the genuine LR towing kit. (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.

I have just fitted a LR towbar from a wrecked 2014 Freelander 2 to my 2013 Freelander 2. I got a bargain price, possibly because the ball was very rusty and had put others off. But I changed the ball for $17 and frame scrubbed up like new.

It was a straight forward plug and play. The towbar came with a plug that matched the pre-existing socket in the left side rear compartment (under the small tray area on the left, no need to remove the side panel).

Removing the bumper takes a while but there's info on the web that describes how.

I traced the electrics and drew the attached diagram to aid my understanding and testing. Everything worked for a standard trailer immediately. I was having some other work done at a dealer, so I asked them if it needed any changes made to the ECU, they said yes and did it (at no charge) but I don't know what that achieved.

In Australia you need to buy an adaptor to convert to rectangle socket or small round. They are 'super cheap'.

Are all Australian fitted towbars the same as the American type receiver hitch?

I don't know if they are all receiver type, it's certainly very common. My own towbar is a 2 inch receiver.
