Intercooler blocked?

Hi all

Could a gunked up or partly blocked intercooler give black smoke under half to full frottle?

Im not sure - but possibly is all I can say.

Have you checked for leaks in the turbo hoses - leak might not be apparent until pressurised by the turbo. I had lots of black smoke when a turbo hose blew a leak, plus loss of power - not on current car. Jules

Hi jules

Dont think its a split pipe as theres no sound either under revving or when the cars under way ( when the smoke happens )

It has only been doing this sinse the exhast camshaft snapped and we rebuilt the engine, we thought it might be the intercooler ( infact aftetcooler.... ) as it sat for 2.5 months before it was rebuiltfully and started for the first time, so maybe the oil that might of been in the cooler could of gunked up with the damp air going into the inlet and outlet pipes?

We have no smoke on start up
No smoke under light frottle movment, can drive to work and see no smoke under very light frottle
Only black smoke when pushing the frottle down harder, motorway on ramp looks more like james bond has turned on the black smoke screen Rolling Eyes
No fault codes at all
Turbo seems good as we can feel the turbo outlet pipe fill and harden when revved
Dosnt make a hissing or vacum sound

Its as if the things getting air but restricted amount. Could it be something like frottle body ( though looked good when we refitted it ) or swirlflaps ( again all looked good when refitted )

The freelander apart from this runsbetter than it did before the engine problem hmmm

Any help would be greatful Freelander 57 plate XS Blue Auto

Could it be a sticky turbo. Understeer when you hit the wall with the front of the car.
Oversteer when you hit the wall with the back of the car.
Horsepower how fast you hit the wall.
Torque how far you take the wall with you.

No codes at all, but if the fault is after the turbo then theres no sensors anyways from looking at it hmmm Freelander 57 plate XS Blue Auto

End result is it has made it about 50% better

Cleaned the map sensor also but thinking it might be worth replacing this?

We did notice that the turbo arm thing was moving about alot while reving, is this normal or just it just move at a set revs?
